Who?
Owen Pye's understated, acoustic and folk-leaning songs go well with a smoldering campfire. No hoopla necessary. I’m not a man of subtlety, though, so I’d rather take this space to do some campaigning for one of the best independent (and newly engaged) songwriters out there right now! And to do that, I’ll just end all of my sentences henceforth with overbearing exclamation points! He’s awesome! Really awesome!
How Is It?
Mr. Pye’s three songs are understandably laidback, but there is also a certain wisdom and seriousness to these stripped-down anthems. (Anthems is a horrible word choice in this situation - Editor.) “Hospital Song” smells of that raw emotion that could easily become terrible despair. Pye sings, “Blue skies aren’t looking as blue as they used to / I’m not sure what to say but that I need you / Get well soon.” When Pye starts singing about Jesus (which he does often), he becomes an amazing hybrid of Drew Danburry and Jon Foreman. So, I pretty much had a heart attack of joy. “We’ve Only Known” clearly shows Pye’s appeal. His lyrics aren’t bogged down by artsy metaphors and his fingers don’t necessarily do any talking, but he is comfortable in his strengths. He creates sweet songs. Nothing more or less, and you can probably relate to these songs of love and hope. When he harmonizes with a female singer during semi-full band and up-tempo “Just A Spark,” the music sounds familiar, even cozy. It’s an amazing quality, and it’s one I don’t hear enough. He’s singing to me right now, but he could just as easily be singing for you.
