review of our ep by ruby ruby. we like their view
The word ‘eclectic’ is liberally used to describe bands/artists, as are the terms ‘experimental’, ‘independent’, ‘grass roots’ or ‘alternative’ but The ‘Oxbow Lake’ are a truly eclectic tribe, roaming through numerous genres, performing at a grass roots level, constantly evolving and thus avoiding easy categorisation.
In essence, they have the true spirit of the 60’s jam bands, whom they occasionally cover in their live sets and the DIY ethics of the punk movement.
Regardless of the genre, they make the songs their own by a combination of disregard for convention and a very distinctive sound: Live shows are upbeat, and could even be described as tribal and funky, where as their recorded material contradicts and is more folkie and goes well with sunny day's, lying on grass, beer in hand.....
wizard was great and thanks to all the bands who played with us on friday. it was a real treat being able to pick the bands!!!
and to the mc's (mc and dt) for what turned out to be funky jam. see video below.
belladrum week and our tour round the coast to bella was tiring but always a laugh with some real special moments (lossiemouth, jamming on the wheelie piano at bella, playing the woodland tent etc)
we just stood in at last minute at the village sunsets due to cancellations and what a great night. lots of video's etc will be available soon. one below in 'night time' scope (?) by maria hall and jeremy. thanks. first time we'd played together for months and the first tune of the night "neanderthal blues"!
our history - we came together in the winter of 2007/2008, we're from around the beautiful wee village of collieston, which has, we're sure, informed our music and how we play. first local gigs in spring of 2008. it felt so good! - we then went on to play some storming summer festivals and gigs further afield. we now mostly headline as the "late night get everyone up dancing band" (!?)nd
our live shows are genre defying and have become good time events, upbeat and attract dancers like fire flies to a flame(??)
it's a wee cottage industry we have here; all the artwork, recording and production, promotion, selling etc is done by the band members and friends, so a big thanks to them all.
this ep has been self released as a taster before the album "away from the main stream", which we hope will be issued in 09??
some people have struggled as badly as we do to describe us:-
"The oxbow lake orchestra fuse a myriad of rhythmns into a good time mix of up beat pop" belladrum festival
"traditional and original funky folk" village sunsets festival
"JAZZY GENRE DEFYING MULTI-INSTRUMENTALISTS" The moorings Aberdeen
reviews:-
"the folk 'faces'!" - the clatt telegraph
"they make the pogues look professional! - the collieston blether
"good time feckin' charlies, the lot of them!" - craggy island gazette (letters page - posted by father jack)
"the box player's a stud and I want him now" - saga newsletter (posted by agnus hillderbottom aged 89 3/4)
"acoustic meditations for the purpose of healing your soul and getting your ass to follow" - Inverness Free church post
"They sound like trees growing in spring under the northern lights" - calrossie times
They remind me of the grateful dead fish - Peterhead pentangle
now for some real one's......

You have an amazing amount of talent in the band....... I went home and listened to your EP in a darkened room on my stereo it was brilliant.
