I love my job, but if money were not an issue, it’s not what I would be doing. I would be a music writer. I buy music. I go to live music shows. I talk about music. I read about music. I have strong opinions about what I see and hear. It won’t hurt to let those opinions be known.
I live in Oxford, MS. We’ve had a great music scene in this area for quite some time. Twenty-five years ago, The Tangents ruled the roost. The presence of great blues musicians such as R.L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough helped fuel a scene that saw the birth of groundbreaking bands like Beanland and The Hilltops in the late 80’s and early 90’s. Bands such as Blue Mountain, The Cooters and Kudzu Kings carried the town into the millineum. The current scene in 2007 is an eclectic mix of blues (Kenny Brown, Burnside Exploration), soul (Wiley and the Checkmates), bluegrass (Mayhem String Band), jam (Daybreakdown), latin (Maria y el Sol), punk (Tyler Keith and the Preacher’s Kids, The Cooters), singer/song writer (Tate Moore, Sanders Bohlke), and roots rock-and-roll (Cary Hudson, Rocket 88).
