Oxfam Ireland works with people around the world to end the injustice of poverty. We are an independent and secular not-for-profit organisation.
Oxfam Ireland is a member of Oxfam International, a confederation of thirteen independent members. The members work together to achieve greater impact by their collective efforts.
What do we believe?
Oxfam believes that all human beings have the right to a home, enough to eat, clean water, a way to make a living, education, healthcare, freedom from violence, a voice, and an identity.
What do we do?
Oxfam is many different things. It's the organisation which helps poor people to build a better future for themselves. It's the relief agency which brings help when disaster strikes. And Oxfam is the campaigner for a fairer world.
Through our work in long-term development, emergencies and campaigning, Oxfam helps people to achieve their right to a life free from poverty, suffering and injustice.
Oxfam is a global movement of PEOPLE, working to overcome poverty, suffering and injustice. People such as the volunteer in the local Oxfam shop; the community leader in Kenya helping local farmers find ways to grow more crops; the water engineer working in an emergency drought; the campaigner lobbying their local political representative on trade rules. All of these individuals make up the organisation that is Oxfam.
Spanning the month of October, Oxjam is a unique music experience that aims to stage as many music events as possible to raise money for Oxfam Ireland . We're asking musicians, promoters - in fact, everyone across Ireland - to put on all kinds of music events during October to raise money for Oxfam. There's no limit on how big or small the events are - classical, club night, mambo and metal, it'll add up to one huge, Ireland-wide, Oxjam festival - raising thousands to fight poverty.
And we need YOUR help to make it happen.
So What's Happening In Dublin?
Glad you asked! We have nine shows confirmed for Oxjam 2007 in Dublin. All proceeds from these shows go to Oxfam Ireland.
As part of Oxjam, MTV launched a brand new talent initiative called 'Get Seen, Get Heard' - calling out to the nation's up-and-coming music stars to get involved in the festival for the chance of recognition on MTV.
Bands and artists playing at Oxjam gigs filmed their performances and uploaded them to a specially created MTV website. The most popular Oxjam acts, as voted by MTV viewers, are now appearing on MTV in a series of Get Seen, Get Heard profiles. Over the coming weeks the 22 finalists will be whittled down to a final five who will each receive a mentoring session with a music industry expert. The pinnacle of the initiative will see each of the five finalists performing at a series of special gigs to mark the beginning of Oxjam 2007, details of which will be confirmed at a later date.
Oxjam 2007 Compilation CD
Several of the artists involved in this year’s Oxjam festival have very kindly donated a track for an Oxjam compilation CD. We hope to have the CD available online very soon..
After you've finished here, you may like to hear this poem sung on myspace...
Poem 2 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse (please see my blog): WALKABOUT WITH MY PEN
Once drove an old sedan, up north, From a place in Sydney to Cairns; Then to Kuranda I went forth, By train, to look without set plans.
I browsed through the trendy market, With fresh fruits of tropical kind; Walked to the creek through lush thicket - Nature’s hand giving peace of mind.
I dined in a scenic cafe; Then, outside, as I wrote for yen, Some passing Kooris called-out: “Hey, You go walkabout with your pen.”
Request or question, I don’t know - Assured voices, elderly men. That’s now several years ago, And I’ve seen the world - with my pen.

Mark Dignam will be traveling to his native Ireland in February, for what truly will be a couple of those great memorable evenings. These gigs will be worth traveling for, that I can guarantee.
Thursday Feb. 5th, 7pm Vicar Street, Dublin, Ireland, with The Swell Season and friends. The gig is a benefit for people with intellectual disabilities and is likely to feature some memorable one-off collaborations.
Sunday Feb. 8th, 8pm Whelans, Dublin, Ireland. This is Mark's headline gig and he will be joined by some very special guests. This is Mark's old stomping ground, and might well be a nostalgia fest...

Just to let you know that the new CQB CD - HOPE SO - is finally finished and during the month of October it's being sold on a not-for-profit basis for only £3 (worldwide), with at least £1 of each sale going to OXFAM. You can order it now & it will be sent out in October to coincide with OXJAM.
Please give it a look and listen on the Crazy Quilt Bouquet page where there are also a couple of tracks from the CD.
If you're feeling very generous, supportive, loving, encouraging, facilitating and amenable you could even pass this information on. It really would be appreciated. I will gladly reciprocate with any information that you wish to share.
And, of course, if you're feeling suitably benevolent, moved, solvent, click-happy, adventurous, or just willing to give it a go – you could always treat yourself!
There's also a slightly desperate, somewhat nerdy and unnecessarily needy press release for you to peruse on the blog...
