Oxfam's overseas programme aims to give long-term support to people in Africa in a way that avoids dependency. We help people to help themselves. Working through local agencies, Oxfam Ireland co-operates with implementing local partners and other Oxfams.
Oxfam believes in assisting people to gain control of their own economic and social development. Our programme aims to identify injustices that keep poor people poor and to help African communities to lobby for the basic human rights often taken for granted in Ireland.
Oxfam's Emergency and Humanitarian Response Work
Oxfam makes the decision to launch an emergency response whenever lives, health, and livelihoods are threatened as a result of natural disasters or armed conflict. We will therefore respond to emergency situations anywhere in the world where we are confident we can save and protect lives.
Oxfam's Campaigns and Advocacy Work
Oxfam Ireland believes that, as well as providing much needed assistance on the ground overseas, we must fight on an international level to change the systems in place that trap people and countries into poverty and suppress their ability to develop. We work very hard to let the public know about the rigged rules and double standards set by rich countries and rich corporations that stop people in African countries from making enough money to send their children to school or pay for water, food and much-needed medical supplies. We also maintain pressure on the Irish government, the IMF, the WTO and World Bank to create a system that offers a better deal for all.
And we have even bigger plans. We want you, your friends, your family to join us in making a difference to millions of peoples' lives. The louder our voices the better we're heard.

Welcome to the official My Space profile for OXJAM, Oxfam Ireland's biggest music event running throughout the country in October 2008!
What is Oxjam?
Oxjam is a unique music experience that aims to stage as many music events as possible throughout the month of October to raise money for Oxfam Ireland.
We're asking musicians, promoters - in fact everyone throughout Ireland - to put on all kinds of music events during the 31 days of October to raise vital money for Oxfam. There's no limit to how big or small the events are - whether you're donating your cloakroom money, a portion of your entry fee or organising a gig or club night, it'll add up to one huge, Ireland-wide Oxjam festival - raising vital money to fight poverty and injustice.
