   About Oxjam Leeds

Oxjam West Yorkshire 08/09 - 31 days full of life-changing music - the main month will be MARCH 2009. Oxjam is one huge UK wide music festival taking place in October, nationwide, to raise lots of cash for Oxfam. Following the success of last year's events we're really hoping that this year will be an even bigger success and we can help to MAKE MUSIC RAISE MONEY END POVERTY. Win tickets to secret gigs in Oxfam shops

Visit www.oxfam.org.uk/oxjam to find out more about how you can get involved.

To give you an idea of what kind of things you could do, here are some of the bloody marvellous events that happened in Leeds for Oxjam 2006....

The Oxjam Team put on some great stuff, including: swing night with the big heat; Capri and the lovely Cara Robinson playing ace sets in Hifi; The Voom Blooms headlining The Fav followed by the Babyshambles aftershow party; and some brilliant in-stores at the Oxfam shop in town, including Duels and The Lodger.

Brainwash Festival raised over £2500 and featured the best bands from Leeds and further a field. A dangerously good time was had by all at Wrathstonbury

The Research, Napoleon IIIrd and Mi Mye played Chantry Chapel -ahhhhhh Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Chiara L's raised A LOT of money and made A LOT of people very happy Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Mark Newton was a champion and did a rather good exhibition, with prints for sale. Pay him lots of money to take pictures for you. He's very good

Sandinista did a month long series of events. Fraternise them frequently in the future, and Oxjam Regional Co-ordinator Alison made a tit of herself by dressing up as a monkey and dancing in the Oxfam shop window like a monkey with a miniature cymbal

Hello,
We are playing the lovely Cardigan Arms on the 21st of March. Being foreigners from Sheffield, it would be grand if you could pop in and see us and bring a few other Leedsies with you if you are free.

Here are a few nice things people have said about us.
Have a listen on our page and see if you like what we are up to

"AN AMAZING LIVE ACT, I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THEM AGAIN" (Sandman Magazine)

"AN IMPRESSIVE SET FROM A BAND WITH A KNACK FOR WRITING CATCHY SONGS AND DELIVERING THEM LIVE AS WELL AS IN THE STUDIO" (Sandman Magazine)
"PROMISING SONG WRITERS" (Tom Robinson, BBC Radio 6)

"THESE DAYS I FIND THRASH AND POWER POP A BIT REPETITIVE, BUT THIS WAS REMINISCENT OF MORRISSEY WHILE STILL BEING PERSONAL, I HEAR THE POSSIBILITY OF A GOOD FUTURE. IT SOUNDS TO ME LIKE YOU COULD SUPRISE US ALL ONE DAY".
(Paul Gambaccini, BBC Radio 6)

Anyway, it would be nice to see you there.

Charlie Parr is from the same Duluth music scene that spawned the likes of Low and Haley Bonar, and his music delves deep into the back roads of American folk music, there’s hints of Robert Johnson, Nick Drake and Will Oldham in his playing, and a true from the heart power and clarity that is simply stunning. This guy is the real thing, and you can hear it in every note he plays, which would also explain why the people at the superb End of the Road festival ask him back every single year!

Neil McSweeney plays beautifully considered and perfectly restrained music that will delight fans of Low, Adrian Crowley, Nina Nastasia, Mark Kozelek, and Jason Molina.

Deftly fingerpicked folk loveliness from a local favourite - Michael Rossiter perfectly executes traditional folk as well as his own material, sings from his heart and gets the perfect sound from his guitar.

Sunday: 1/3/2009 @ The Packhorse, Leeds. Doors 8pm.
A Forest of Sound presentation in association. £5 adv / £6 on the door.
Tickets available at Jumbo Records, Crash Records, and We Got Tickets.
