Oyl Miller grew up in Portland, Oregon with strong interests in art, expression and sports. College brought Miller to St. Louis, Missouri, where he spent four antic-filled years on the banks of the Mississippi river living in the spirit of his boyhood hero, Tom Sawyer. Miller spent his college summers in Harrison, Maine, working at a camp and exploring the nature of creativity as well as a bit of New England. In 2005 Oyl Miller attended a major league baseball tryout as a pitcher. He threw several fastballs and a series of curveballs that made the casually conversing scouts behind the backstop pay attention to his performance. They had him throw more pitches than the other prospects and Miller left the mound knowing he pitched his best. Five pitchers were signed as professionals following their performance. Miller’s performance was dismissed for his lack of physique. One scout noted the following on his prospect roster next to Miller’s name, ’91 MPH, but NO BODY.’ In 2006 Oyl Miller decided to officially record some of the songs he had written over the past couple of years as the Oyl Miller Band. Eleven of these recordings were compiled and released as an album called Go West. Produced by the independent label Co-Pilot Records, Go West is available in hard copy at CD Baby and for download on iTunes.
