   Green Bay Packers's Blurbs
About me:
The Green Bay Packers were founded on August 11, 1919 by Curly Lambeau and George Whitney Calhoun. Lambeau solicited funds for uniforms from his employer, the Indian Packing Company. He was given $500 for uniforms and equipment, on the condition that the team be named for its sponsor. The Packers became a professional franchise in 1921. Financial troubles plagued the team and the franchise was lost the same year. The Packers found new backers the next year and regained the franchise. The financial backers, known as the "Hungry Five," formed the Green Bay Football Corporation. The Packers are now the only publicly owned company with a board of directors in American professional sports. Typically, a team is owned by one person, partnership, or corporate entity; thus, a "team owner." It has been speculated that this is one of the reasons the Green Bay Packers have never been moved from the city of Green Bay, a city of just over 100,000 people. By comparison, the typical NFL football city must be populated in the millions to support a team. However, the Packers have long had a large following throughout the state of Wisconsin; in fact, for decades, the Packers played several home games each year in Milwaukee. The Packers did not move their entire home schedule to Green Bay until 1995. Based on the original 'Articles of Incorporation for the (then) Green Bay Football Corporation' put into place in 1923, if the Packers franchise was sold, after the payment of all expenses, any remaining monies would go to the Sullivan-Wallen Post of the American Legion in order to build "a proper soldier's memorial." This stipulation was enacted to ensure that the club remained in Green Bay and that there could never be any financial enhancement for the shareholders. At the November 1997 annual meeting, shareholders voted to change the beneficiary from the Sullivan-Wallen Post to the Green Bay Packers Foundation. In 1950, the Packers held a stock sale to again raise money to support the team. In 1956, area voters approved the construction of a new stadium, which would later be called Lambeau Field. Another stock sale occurred late in 1997 and early in 1998. It added 105,989 new shareholders and raised more than $24 million, monies which were utilized for the Lambeau Field redevelopment project. Priced at $200 per share, fans bought 120,010 shares during the 17-week sale, which ended March 16, 1998. As of June 8, 2005, 111,921 people (representing 4,749,925 shares) can lay claim to a franchise ownership interest. Shares of stock include voting rights, but the redemption price is minimal, no dividends are ever paid, the stock cannot appreciate in value, and there are no season ticket privileges associated with stock ownership. No shareholder is allowed to own more than 200,000 shares, a safeguard to ensure that no one individual is able to assume control of the club. As a means of running the corporation, a board of directors is elected by the stockholders. The board of directors in turn elect a seven-member Executive Committee (officers) of the corporation, consisting of a president, vice president, treasurer, secretary and three members-at-large. The president is the only officer who receives compensation. The balance of the committee is sitting gratis. The Packers have won more league championships (twelve, including three Super Bowls) than any other American professional football team. They are also the only American professional football team to win three straight titles, which they did twice (1929, 1930, 1931, and 1965, 1966, 1967). The Green Bay Packers of the 1960s were one of the most dominant NFL teams of all time. Coach Vince Lombardi took over a last-place team and built it into a juggernaut, winning five league championships over a seven-year span. Green Bay won the first two Super Bowls. The Super Bowl trophy was ultimately named the Vince Lombardi Trophy in recognition of his and his team's accomplishment. The Packers fan base is notoriously dedicated: no matter how well the team performs, Lambeau Field has been sold out every game since 1960. The Packers have one of the longest waiting lists for season tickets in professional sports. The current wait time for season tickets is approximately 35 years. For this reason, it is not unusual for fans to designate a recipient of their season tickets in their wills. The Packers also draw the largest national TV audiences for the NFL's Monday Night Football telecasts. Packer fans are commonly known as "cheeseheads," a derogatory nickname for people from Wisconsin, as the state is known for its cheese production. To poke fun at this nickname, they wear foam triangles made to look like cheese on their heads, which further re-enforces the "cheesehead" designation. [edit] Nickname and uniforms Curly Lambeau, the team's founder, solicited funds for uniforms from his employer, the Indian Packing Company. He was given $500 for uniforms and equipment, on the condition that the team be named for its sponsor (this is similar to what would happen the following year with the Decatur Staleys, who would become the Chicago Bears. The new Green Bay team was referred to as "the Indians" in one of the earliest newspaper articles about the new squad, but by the time they played their first game they had adopted the name "Packers." In the early days, the Packers were also referred to as the "Bays" and the "Blues" (and even occasionally as "the Big Bay Blues"). These were never official nicknames, although Curly Lambeau did consider replacing "Packers" with "Blues" in the 1920s. In 1920, the Indian Packing Company was purchased by the Acme Packing Company. The Acme Packing Company continued its support of Lambeau's team, and in their first season in the NFL the team wore jerseys with the words "ACME PACKERS" emblazoned on the chest. Lambeau, a Notre Dame alumnus, chose the team's colors of blue and gold/yellow from his alma mater. In the 1930s, the Packers briefly experimented with green and gold, although they always returned to the traditional navy. In 1959, new head coach Vince Lombardi changed the colors to the current dark green and athletic gold/yellow. This color scheme yields the common Packers nickname, "The Green and Gold". [edit] Current season The Packers currently stand at 3-10 with three games left, and are ranked last in the NFC North division (one game behind the third-place Detroit Lions). The Packers' November 27 loss to the Eagles assured the Packers their first losing season since 1991 and Brett Favre's first losing season in his career. The team's offensive roster has been devastated by injuries, including notable 2005 starters or backups. The running back position in particular has been taken up by Samkon Gado, after wide receiver Javon Walker and running backs Ahman Green, Najeh Davenport and Tony Fisher all suffered major injuries.

I didn't just read that 'someone' here thinks that Rodgers is a good QB, did I? And that TT is doing a good job? OMFG. Apparently you missed Rodgers' debut. You know the one where he broke his poor lil foot? Wake up! That was his chance and he doesn't have it! He's failed to do anyhing impressive in preseason. If there was even a spark of genius or ability then there would be some media speculation about who's getting the starting position. The last three years, the speculation has been whether or not Favre is going to retire. Keep in mind too, that just because someone got drafted early, doesn't make them an automatic HOFer. I remember the bruhaha surrounding Brett Conway. His sorry ass didn't even win the starting job! I'm going to leave the TT bashing for another post because the list of his faults, failures and stupidities is quite a bit longer.

As far as the draft picks went. I'll reserve judgement until I see them perform. It bothers me that our most glaring holes haven't been addressed.

I too was depressed about not getting Moss. Yes he did moon the fans but another high impact established reciever would have been awsome. But there is a good chance we could have some real standouts this year. You never know.

I was hoping they would come out of the draft with TE Greg Olsen, Randy Moss and Michael Turner. That wouldve been a nice offense. I was hoping they wouldve taken a chance on Michael Bush in 3rd round too.

Looks like comments require APPROVAL if they're really long...

I'll try to make this one shorter.

In response to WHY the pack passed up the QB who fell to 16:

HELLO! WE ALREADY HAVE A QB THAT FELL OUT OF THE TOP 5 TO PICK 24 IN 2005. Last time I checked, he is still sitting on the bench and Favre is going nowhere! Do we need another first round pick sitting on our bench!?! NO!!! Did we need to select another QB that will demand first round money to carry a clipboard!?! NO!!! Didn't we criticize the front office for selecting Rodgers to sit on the bench!?! YES!!! Didn't we feel like they should of selected a player that could make an immediate impact for the team on the field right away!?! Last time I checked, YES!!! TED, YOU ARE DOING GREAT! Dear fans: BACK OFF and let the MAN do HIS job!

I actually liked Thompson's strategy on the second day...I would have liked a QB to compete with Ingle or another Blocking TE. At the end of the day it sounded like special teams, potential WR, and defense became the top priorities. I also like that they picked up 2 RB's to compete and add some talent. The guy from FL is productive but unknown if he will translate to NFL. Getting the kicker so late and those solid special teamers three picks in a row was genius. Also I think Thompson was not high on any of the mid-lower R1 guys so he took the guy he knew in the first 60 picks he wanted then traded down. That DL guy if he pans out could be another stud on what could be the deepest Dline in the division. GB really added some speed on the WR side and it will be interesting to see that develop in the camps to come. Not a flashy draft but a solid job done by Thompson and crew.

Hey all you Packers fans!

I just finished reading the comments directly related to the draft and I have to say... THANK GOD NONE OF YOU WORK FOR OUR SCOUTING DEPARTMENT! I will elaborate... Our picks were GREAT and you are dumb if you think they sucked. First, let's address those who believe we should have taken Brady Quinn as the 16th overall pick... DID YOU NOT WATCH THE 2005 DRAFT? WE HAVE A TOP RATED QB THAT FELL TO US IN THE FIRST ROUND THAT YEAR WHO IS CURRENTLY SITTING ON THE BENCH! Is our bench not warm enough!?! Not to mention, Favre did say he was coming back and Quinn is too short. ::PAUSE:: Don't judge Rodgers, he hasn't had an opportunity to really play yet. Moving on... If we didn't take Harrell when we did (Did I spell his name right!?!), he wouldn't have been there at 47! He was a player that our scouting department felt deserved an "A" grade. Besides, we've been weak up the middle ever since we lost Gilbert Brown's services. This guy is tough, was the 2nd interior defensive lineman off the board, and will surprise all of you! Moving on again... trading down from our second pick was genius! I'm sure at the point of the trade, Ted had 20 to 30 players with a "B" grade left on the board AND he knew we could use a few of them. It didn't matter which one we got, as long as we got a couple of them AND we did! That spells success in my book! We took players when we were supposed to take players. We didn't reach for anything. The safety from VT we picked was only the 3rd SS off the board. The kicker we got this afternoon was the 2nd kicker off the board. Sure, we didn't get a TE early BUT were the ones available worthy of a higher pick!?! NO!!! Bubba was coming off od an injury last season and was learning a new blocking scheme. He will bounce back. The last thing you want to do is take away a weapon that Favre has chemistry with. We will be fine at TE.

I hate to say it but i completely agree with Favre i would be pissed too if i was him, Thompson is to stupid to put any weapons around Favre to give him a chance. Thompson needs to get canned and put somebody in the front office that will do something.

Reported today on foxsports.com and ESPN has been running it all day that Favre wanted a trade a couple days after the draft. I can't blame him hopefully the packers can make him happy. Not getting Randy Moss seems to be his breaking point. I don't want to see him go but I'm not mad that he is frustrated by our team. Who knows maybe this could be the beginning of the end with him in Green Bay. I hope not.
