GeneralCould the secret of happiness really be as simple as a 9-volt battery and a few electrodes? I went to a Harvard lab to find out. This is a photo of me getting my brain zapped with electric current.

   Pagan Kennedy's Blurbs
About me:
I'm the author of nine books and a contributor to a lot of publications, including the The New York Times Magazine, The Boston Globe Magazine, Dwell, and Details. Several of my books have been optioned by film studios, including Fox Films and MTV Films.

Many years ago, I published a "secretly famous" zine called Pagan's Head; as a result, Wired dubbed me "Queen of the Zines" --though I know I was far from the biggest galoot in the publishing underground. If you look up "zine" in the American Heritage dictionary you'll find me.

MY LATEST BOOK...
... is a biography of the first person to have a sex change from female to male.

The New York Times Book Review calls this biography "mesmerizing. As close to Shakespearean tragedy as you can come."

The book follows Michael Dillon through his groundbreaking medical transformation and then to India, where he became one of the first Westerners ever to take vows as a Tibetan Buddhist.

"Devastatingly good . . . Novelist Kennedy's literary chops serve her well in this fascinating and heartbreaking social history."
--Booklist

"Succeeds grandly. Kennedy does a remarkable job of conveying Dillon's youthful inner turmoil . . . The First Man Made Man is a dramatic, revelatory narrative that brightly illuminates the psyche of the first female-to-male."
--Chicago Sun-Times

"Dillon's tale makes for a wild read. Absorbing."
--Entertainment Weekly

Enjoy your weekend, Pagan! Already started reading, although I'm always doing several books at the same time.

Oh, and you guys shouldn't be worrying about age, especially in YOUR age:-)

Pagan, you called it, I'm feeling the senior status thing. Sometime after I wrote you last, I left a comment on "tom" of all of myspace's page. (the president of myspace, that tom!) As a result, 1000 people a day came to my page. (that is many for me.) Todays' youth are a wild bunch. Just looking at the friend requests made me feel like granny- racquel. I wanted to tell the girls to not pose like that, and at least take the gun out of the thong. (!) I practically felt myself reaching through the screen with a sweater..."cover up honey you must be cold!" and the boys like those horror movies, I mean...really..out of any sort of context- violent- images.... and they write sweet notes and then i click on the page and almost jump to the ceiling.

I guess I had a bubble of protection from the myspace culture at large seeking out my own pals...musicians and authors in our, um....age group, not that i did that on purpose or anything!

ANYWAY, after all that, a senior center on myspace sounds mighty fine, and i know you were joking but sign me up for a rocking chair, and snuggly blanket, and porch privledges basking in the sun and maybe a brief , yet, stimulating conversation with the likes of pagan kennedy. who cares if we suddenly blank out of under the weight of our own procrastination dealing with our own friends lists. at least i know I'm in good company.

:)

your times piece was brilliant, here is a public kudos for it!!! more of that my wonder woman!

peace,racquel

I also very much enjoyed the Times piece, which was both accurate and done with a light touch.

Thanks for the add.

Preferably Ann Arbor if at all possible - which would prolly be doable considering we have about a zillion bookstores, including the Borders flagship store! :)
