In an age of rapid globalization, many artists in the Indian Ocean island of Sri Lanka have turned to European and North American artists for cultural influence. Moving against this tide; Pahan Silu-- has received international renown for having been the first group of musicians in years, who have pioneered a style of uniquely Sri Lankan music. Recognized by their trademark unplugged sound, Pahan Silu has blended traditional Sri Lankan poetry (kavi) with African and Latin rhythms to produce a sound that is uniquely theirs.
In addition to their musical voice, however, Pahan Silu-- has also confounded many of Sri Lanka's record label executives by writing, arranging, producing, manufacturing, and distributing their music independently - via their private recording company Pahan Silu Enterprises.
Headquartered in the United States, Pahan Silu-- began modestly - performing for small audiences throughout the midwestern United States. Within three years of their inception, its members had begun performing for audiences as far away as Washington DC, Baltimore, Chicago, Detroit and California - and with artists such as Sangeet Nipun Sanath Nandasiri.
They were recently invited to perform on the BBC's "Himaw Arana" program, celebrating the 80th birthday of Sri Lanka's most renowned and respected singer (Pandit Amaradeva), for which they composed the song "Mirayen Eha Thale"; and are preparing for the release of their third studio single "Mihiraki Oba"!
