Artist Sickboy (Frisson Gallery exhibition, July 2007) appears to draw from Roald Dahl’s story of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in his latest show, Stay Free, which features a 14ft ‘fairytale inspired’ wooden house, the Stay Free Factory installation. The Stay Free Factory shall be bequeathed to one guest; 1000 golden keys will be released during the show, and the person whose key fits the lock will become the new owner of the factory.
The exhibition is groundbreaking by way of its concept, but also because it is being organised entirely by Sickboy’s own team and is free from corporate sponsorship. Not one to stay closed-mouthed, Sickboy felt it necessary to make a socio-political statement regarding his views over the most recent Tate Modern exhibition, a celebration of street art, by plonking a giant steel cage containing a heart shaped helium balloon on the Millennium bridge, a protest at the corporate sponsorship of the street art expo. However, Paint & Beatz have heard Sickboy is just mad because Tiger beer have refused to provide the free drinks for the opening night, after feeling the pinch from the global downturn!
The Stay Free exhibition launches on December 3 from 18:30 to 22:00, and is open to the general public from December 4-10, 2008 between 12:00-18:00. The venue is at The Tramshed, 6-8 Garden Walk, Shoreditch, London, EC2A 3EQ (nearest Tube station is Old St). Visit thesickboy.com to request an invitation to the opening.
