Formed from the ashes of Sin 34, Painted Willie was signed to SST Records by Greg Ginn in 1985 after 2 self releases on Spinhead Records (the debut self titled 7" ep, and the follow up 12" ep titled "My Fellow Americans" both released in 1984). The band fit with the label's trademark sense of adolescent humor, though tied more to straight-ahead rock than punk or hardcore. Guitarist Vic Makauskas, bassist Phil Newman, and drummer / fimmaker Dave Markey formed in Los Angeles in 1984 with a second guitarist Nick Delaney, then dropped Delaney and released Mind Bowling on SST as a three piece in 1985, then recorded a live EP in nearby Van Nuys one year later, during their 6 month US tour with Black Flag. Upsidedowntown followed in 1987, after which the band broke up, though SST released the Relics compilation in 1988. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide

Hey there - I saw you guys in San Antonio in '86 with Black Flag and Gone - it was an unforgettably great show. This is what rock & roll is supposed to be. I look forward to the day when PAINTED WILLIE WILL RULE THE WORLD. Best, Russell, The Mold Monkies
