BIO
Heavy drones, overtone melodies & the sound of the land – Paintings for Animals is the vocal electro-acoustic music of Pearson Wallace-Hoyt. The sound possesses an archaic resonance connecting the human voice with an Earthen narrative of the landscape, flora, fauna & human ritual of both pre & post-history. Started in 2001 & transformed for performance in 2007, countless shows have taken place at art, dance & music galleries, warehouses, bars, cafés, DIY venues & on live radio. Paintings music has been used in film, for video, installation & with dance.
"I think it was the smart folks in Midday Veil who told me about Paintings for Animals (Seattle musician Pearson Wallace-Hoyt and myriad highly evolved cats) a while ago, but somehow his name slipped my mind—until now. Thankfully, Paintings for Animals returned to my consciousness—and proceeded to raise it to astronomic heights. PFA's gist resides in mysterious drones filigreed with field recordings of equally enigmatic origins. Uneasy atmospheres redolent of Coil and Organum's work drift through your sensorium, hover and whir for a while, and then rearrange the ganglia there. It's really something else—a weird party soundtrack at the microcosmic level or a score to your most mystical, baffling dreams."
-Dave Segal, The Stranger
"Prepare for a different brand of sonic bliss [...] when the haunting ambiences of Paintings for Animals will wash over you like waves at a heavenly deserted beach.
-Casey Catherwood, The Stranger
"Paintings for Animals make hypnotic and gorgeous collages from vocal snippets and field recordings; I had a hard time leaving their MySpace page."
-Christopher Delaurenti, The Stranger
