About me:

To some, the bands on or soon to be on this page or posting bulletins are not much alike, but they all share a commonality in mixed influences or early garage, psychedelic, surf, and Motown. Garage rock has spanned nearly 5 decades now, but there's a common thread that bands from all decades share: they have a combination of at least two of the following: Three chord songs, psychedelic, surf, Motown, powerpop, and fuzzy guitars. The Paisley Underground is a term used to described 60's influenced psychedelic/garage/surf/power pop music created by bands in the '80s who were inspired by an earlier generation of mostly unheard of but great rock and roll bands that had mixtures of 3 chord garage, psychedelia, surf, and Motown. We're here to celebrate that movement, the origins it came from, and everyone out there who's still going or moving it forward. I came up with the idea of "Paisley Umbrella" since it's something that people can fit under. I'm not going to lament about the crap that most people like since it's shoved on them, but every decade or so, people get fed up with it, so they go back to basics and create music that's raw, fun, and loud. The real truth in all of this is that they always go backwards to original garage/psych/surf and powerpop. Great Rock 'n' Roll is basic, fun, can either be three chords or have some musical harmony, be lo-fi or have great studio production and some musical nuances, but it has a beat you can move to! It's like explaining the difference between The Who and Led Zeppelin. I'd rather be singing along and dancing in a small club than watching some bloated, classically trained ego in a big stadium playing guitar solos! I have a special affection for bands from the Australian Garage Rock scene in the '80s to mid '90s. Go Aussie Go! I'll forego the rest of the history lesson. Garage, psychedelic, surf and powerpop all have a shared origin and combine in various ways to make the best rock and roll out there.

Who I'd like to meet:

People, musicians, and fans related to all things that can fit under the Paisley Umbrella (TM). I review CDs that otherwise do not get much press. I publish reviews in the order that CDs come in. I make exceptions for upcoming/new releases and bands that are coming to Austin in the near future. I only review CDs. I sometimes review downloads, but packaging is also an expression of the artist and their work. Therefore, it adds to the review as well as the overall experience of hearing the music. CDs are cheap to make and cheap to send. Although I endorse vinyl as having a bette sound quality, I view that as a consumer end product and do not want to take away from that. Therefore, I don't ask for vinyl. I've done reviews for Dirty Water, No Fun, Get Hip, Wicked Cool, Ricochet Sound Recordings, and many others. I review unsigned bands, bands on foreign labels with or without US distribution, and bands on indie labels. I believe that we do this because we love music and want people to know about it, so I love getting to know likeminded people. If you'd like to send me something to review, send me a message and I'll reply with my address.
