Bio
PALLAS XXV Biography At last, XXV, the long awaited album from heavy proggers Pallas is to be released on the 24th of January 2011 on Music Theories Recordings, part of the Mascot Label Group. It will be the first album to feature new vocalist Paul Mackie and as previously announced it is the sequel to the bands hugely successful ‘Sentinel’ album 25 years on. Recorded at the band’s Mill Studio in Aberdeenshire, XXV will also be available as a Special Edition featuring a DVD filmed live at the band’s storming show closing set at the 2010 Loreley Night of The Prog festival in Germany, as well as being made available as a gatefold sleeve vinyl release. XXV has been over a year in the writing and recording and marks a welcome return of Pallas’ heavier rocking prog, and as anyone who has recently seen the band on their handful of XXV preview shows there is a new dynamism to the band, brought about in the main by new frontman Paul Mackie’s far more upfront vocal style. Hailing from Aberdeen, Scotland, Pallas first came to the attention of rock audiences in the early '80s with, what was for those days quite unusual, a self financed live album Arrive Alive. This seminal album bore all the hallmarks of what still continues to be the distinctive Pallas sound - a heady rocky, bombastic theatrical and emotional mixture, with key tracks such as Arrive Alive, Queen of the Deep and The Ripper. Arrive Alive saw them branch out from their Scottish base to play gigs throughout the UK including a successful headlining run at London's Marquee Club, these frequent 1000 mile round trips, saw them thrust to the vanguard of The New Wave of British Prog Rock which later featured such bands as Twelfth Night, Pendragon and IQ, and Pallas secured a recording contract with EMI records, as did Marillion who had been ploughing a similar furrow in England. During this time Pallas had been working towards a concept album based on their interpretation of the Atlantis mythology, and were teamed with legendary Yes producer Eddie Offord to produce the album which was to become The Sentinel, in Atlanta Georgia in the late summer / early autumn of 1983. The album was released in an impressive gatefold sleeve by renowned artist Patrick Woodroffe in February 1984. Though some of the original conceptual tracks were absent, they were recorded later as B-sides, to be added back into the mix in future CD re-issues. The Sentinel featured the classic prog rock tracks Atlantis and Rise and Fall, along with the rockier Eyes in The Night (Arrive Alive) and Shock Treatment. The line up at the time was Euan Lowson (vocals), Graeme Murray (bass & vocals), Niall Mathewson (guitars), Ronnie Brown (keyboards) and Derek Forman (drums). A UK tour ensued with ambitious theatrical sets and effects but this was soon followed by the departure of singer Euan Lowson. His replacement was Alan Reed and the first release with new singer was The Knightmoves EP with the epic Sanctuary as its centrepiece. A second album on EMI followed in 1986, The Wedge, which saw the band in more melodic rock territory whilst still keeping that added edge, featuring live crowd pleasers The Executioner and Rat Racing amongst others. Immediately after the albums release EMI and Pallas parted company, and after a string of further tours and commencement of work on an uncompleted 3rd studio album the band entered a quiet phase occasionally playing in Europe or contributing a track to compilation albums. The dawn of the growth of the internet led the band to realise that despite UK record company and radio station apathy there still was a great deal of love for what they did and in 1998 the band, with new drummer Colin Fraser, found themselves back in the recording studio. Once again self financed and produced, this time the result was Beat The Drum. This was a mixture of tracks originally due to be on the previously commenced third album, such as Ghosts, along with freshly written material Fragments of The Sun and Beat The Drum itself. Such was the interest in the band and this project that the band were signed a European recording deal and in 2001 released the modern prog rock classic The Cross & The Crucible. Loosely a concept album based on the theme of the tension between religion and science The Cross & The Crucible saw great critical acclaim and put Pallas back on the map as purveyors of a unique flavour of heavy melodic progressive rock. In 2003 they released the Live DVD/CD The Blinding Darkness. 2005 saw the release of The Dreams of Men, another Progressive tour de force featuring Ghostdancers, Warriors and the “epic” Invincible. A show in Poland was filmed for the DVD release Moment to Moment. With the 25th Anniversary of The Sentinel approaching the band decided that the time was right to write the long discussed sequel to their 80’s classic. Thus, work commenced on the next studio album XXV. After an optimistic celebratory ending to The Sentinel, XXV looks at our planet 25,000 years after the planet is saved by our “creators”, The Atlanteans, an advanced alien race that “seeded” the Earth as an anthropological experiment. Having watched us from afar they send A Sentinel to take stock of our progress, and to decide if the “experiment” should continue, or whether enough is enough! Who is your money on? Thus XXV is now born. During the progress of the writing and rehearsing a decision was made to replace singer Alan Reed with locally based vocalist Paul Mackie. This controversial move has reenergised the band as can be heard on the album. 5 years after their last studio album Pallas will return with the follow up to the progressive rock classic The Sentinel. The band have also signed a new record deal with the Mascot Label Group, and celebrated this early September 2010 with a headline performance at the famous German open-air theatre Loreley. Pallas will also be undertaking a number of European dates before playing various festivals during the summer. Dates so far confirmed are: Fri Feb 4th The Tunnels Aberdeen, Sat Feb 5th The House of Progression at The Peel, Kingston upon Thames, Sat March 5th Pallas headline The Classic Rock Society ‘Best of The Year’ Awards Show at Montgomery Hall, Wath Upon Dearne and have also been asked to headline the IO Pages Festival on the 15th April 2011 near Den Haag. Hello! I've published a review of "XXV" on my French-language blog (that speaks about prog rock and metal, games, comics and assorted nerdy stuff). Short story: very good album, probably the most solid Pallas release since "The Wedge" (which is still my favorite). http://wp.me/ppneF-1A6
