Pamella
Biography
Pamella Paiva—Brazilian-born singer, songwriter and guitarist—embarked upon a life-changing odyssey while still in her teens, journeying to the United States from her native Sao Paulo in order to conquer the American music business. She’s more than up to the challenge.
Now in her 20s and based in San Francisco, the bright and beautiful Pamella is ready to unleash her sultry, soulful songs on the world. Fluent in English, Portuguese, and Spanish, she’s embraced a multitude of influences—rock, blues, and both American and Brazilian jazz—and channeled them into her own sound. Pamella is a passionate singer songwriter with a charismatic stage presence and extensive musical perspective. She counts Cass Elliott of the Mamas and the Papas as one of her primary artistic inspirations, as well as several current artists including Rihanna, Brandi Carlile, and Pink, and has often been compared to these counterparts.
Her powerful live performances as lead vocalist with the Bay Area rock band Speed Queen brought her to the attention of manager/entrepreneur Joe Q. Bretz. He and partner Richard Verdoni subsequently signed her to a contract with their company Sound Byte Music Management.
Currently, Pamella is completing her debut American EP. Her first single, “Miracle,” a poppy, uplifting song co-written by Pamella and Bay Area producer Joel Jaffe was mixed by famed producer Aaron “Freedom” Lyles, and has been selected for the soundtrack of the feature film The Chosen One, starring Rob Schneider, to be released in the Spring of 2009.
Much of her childhood in Brazil was spent studying music and dance. Her father—a part-time drummer—introduced her to jazz and blues, and encouraged her to follow her musical inclinations. By the time she was 12 years old, she had written a number of original songs and decided to become a professional singer.
After stints in a couple of Brazilian groups, Pamella made plans to relocate to the U.S. as soon as she finished school. She worked at odd jobs until she earned enough cash, and moved to San Francisco at the age of 19.
“I didn’t know anyone, but I spoke a little English,” Pamella recalls. “I went on craigslist.com every day and checked the musicians’ personals.” Eventually, she teamed up with fellow Brazilian Horacio Ferres in Speed Queen, playing numerous well-received Bay Area shows. After signing with Sound Byte, she elected to go solo in order to further develop on her own as an artist.
As her career moves forward, she’s continuing her studies with classes in vocal technique and piano. Her eclectic tastes are reflected in the songs on her iPod. “I listen to Janis Joplin, Hendrix, AC/DC, Nirvana, the Beatles, Frou Frou, French music, and bossa nova,” she says. “Jobim is my Brazilian hero, Sinatra is my American hero, and Holly Cole is my favorite singer.”
She’s delighted to be living in San Francisco. As she explains, “I believe people are warmer here. Maybe it’s the sense that we have the freedom to be who we want to be. And I love that so many amazing bands came from here in the ‘60s and ‘70s. So much musical history was made in San Francisco.”
Pamella would like nothing better than to make some musical history herself, and she’s determined and talented enough to do it.
