Review:
PAM MARK HALL–“PALER SHADE” (Storyville/R.E.X., 1993)
Produced and recorded by Dave Perkins for THE STATE
This is one of the finest forgotten recordings of the early-'90s singer/songwriter boom. . . . [Pam Mark Hall’s] voice possesses both the glow of Jewel and the strength of Trisha Yearwood as she explores a variety of roots-related styles. . . . "Rock Me on the Water" is an acoustic blues piece . . . and "Paler Shade of You" is a world music smorgasbord with Italian accordion, exotic percussion, and gypsy violin. "All Right Now" and "See Me Grow" are two of the most thoughtful and tuneful pieces that the overpopulated and loosely defined category of singer/songwriter can lay claim to.

PAM MARK HALL KNOWS. Pam Mark Hall is a singer/songwriter who Knows how to celebrate the human experience. Acknowledged early on for her lyrical depth and creative virtue, she quickly emerged as an artist with sensitivity to emotional and spiritual truths. She is a Grammy and Dove nominated artist with 6 solo CCM albums, and songs on two gold albums to her credit.
After a lengthy hiatus from the CCM field, Pam returned to her acoustic roots, transcending the new folk approach to record PALER SHADE. Impressionistic, her earthy tones intertwine the relationships of humanity, and creation. PALER SHADE was produced by veteran blues/rock writer/artist/producer Dave Perkins. Dave’s approach was to capture Pam’s solo performance on guitar or keyboard, and then to weave the rest of the track around it like a tapestry." It was a very demanding and yet satisfying experience to return to my acoustic roots.' Says Pam. 'Dave was a tenacious believer in my ability to deliver instrumentally and vocally, and had the patience to let me keep at it til we were both satisfied.”
Pam’s writing, performing, and production skills cover a broad creative spectrum, ranging from bluesy-folk to jazzy pop-rock.
Over the past 20 years, in addition to songwriting, recording, singing on national jingles and performing at intimate venues such as Nashville’s famous BlueBird Café, Pam has spent extensive time producing cause-related programs that integrate charity, business and music. Most notably, she produced a contest and showcase for the Salvation Army for homeless songwriters that resulted in single song contracts for several writers with major music row publishers. Pam recently co-produced with Steinway Pianos of Nashville “Healing Hands at Steinway.” Physicians … who are also exceptional musicians performed in concert to benefit the W. O. Smith Nashville Community Music School.
Pam Mark Hall recently joined forces with veteran rock-pop writer/producer/guitarist and vocalist Jerry Chamberlain as half of the duo Pamelita and Parker.

You won't believe this—or maybe you will ;-)—but I just finished re-watching (for about the billionth time) Taymor's Frida, went online to check eMail, and read your blog comment! I love all things Julie Taymor; and I love the fire and passion that was Kahlo's; and, even with its moments of unevenness, I love that film. I was feeling low and needed some inspiration. It worked.
Anyway, The Life and Times of Frida Kahlo has been playing recently on PBS and I DVR'd it. You should check HERE for showtimes and purchase information. Good stuff, indeed, and clearly rife with source material for the Taymor-Hayek vehicle we both relish.
Hi Pam. Thankyou so much for your praise. It means a lot. We have always shared a dream to visit Nashville, so to receive a compliment from a such great musician living there has spread a smile across the whole band :o) The Sons
Friend of friends. I am so, so grateful for our connection...our synergy...our bond. Not only one of my favorite artists, but my soul sister...Can't wait to see you this week.
I feel you. The eye contact thing drove me absolutely BANANAS!!!! As did McCain's whole 'tactic vs. strategy' bit. Uh...yeah...I'm thinking Obama kinda DOES know the difference and was making an astute observation on how his discourteous opponent's proposal to dispose armed forces in an organized operation (read: TACTIC) wasn't necessarily a policy designed to achieve a long-term aim (see: STRATEGY). The fact that McCain thinks it was only proves his own confusion regarding the nuance between the two terms. Or his delusional certainty regarding the immutability of the surge. OY—wait for it—VAY.
Pam thank you so much! I've never been compared to a wave before and that's probably one of the kindest and sweetest compliments I've ever received!
Your sound is also comparable to a wave as well! More crashing like when it first hits and then silky when it returns to the ocean! I definitely like "Rock Me On The Water".
