Pan Am Down started as a solo project by Joshua Kraemer (Ultra Cindy/Collider/Her Sparkle Dims) in Brooklyn, NY while he was a NYC Transit Worker. He recorded "One" which was released 2/17/09 on Imperfect Smile Records. After a short solo tour of the Northeast, the decision was made to move back to Norfolk, VA and build a band around what he had started. As things always seem to find a way of coming together, the new Pan Am Down line up is right where it needs to be with the addition of Ralph Bautista (Collider & Her Sparkle Dims), Tiffany Riley (No Flowers for Him) and Justin Trauger.
REVIEW: The Big Takeover 64; Pan Am Down, "One" by Mark Suppanz Guitarist/singer JOSHUA KRAEMER was previously in Virginia shoegazers ULTRA CINDY, who released an LP called Mermaid's Parade, and appeared on Brilliant/Spin Art's Wyatt's Torch compilation in 1994. After stints with DAMIEN JURADO, SUPERCHUNK, and THE WEDDING PRESENT, the now Brooklyn-based Kraemer returns with this new project. Here he plays more stripped-down, introspective acoustic (and occasional electric) folk-pop, handling virtually all the instruments, even doing his own harmonizing. The ominous moniker (referencing the now-defunct airline where my uncle coincidentally worked for many years) is perhaps an allegory for the despondent subject matter, in which Kraemer addresses themes of lost love, regret, and missed opportunities. But it's Kraemer's graceful, comforting croon, a genuine willingness to bare his soul, and his attractive, resonant playing, that will keep you absorbed throughout. (imperfectsmilerecords.com)

PAN AM DOWN
ONE
(Imperfect Smile Records)
According to the press notes Joshua Kraemer has spent the last few years working for New York Transit. Prior to this he was a member of Ultra Cindy as well as playing with numerous acts that included Superchunk, The Wedding Present and The Swirlies. Now that he's turned his back on public transport to embark on a solitary musical ride in the guise of Pan Am Down, his work with the latter band in particular would seem to have rubbed off. Like a stoner rock take on dream pop via Nashville, this debut release bears constant comparison to the songcraft and tonality of Evan Dando, a sugar-free Bob Mould and an unplugged Swervedriver. A soporific blend of gently jangling acoustics, Birdsian harmonies and a country twang soundtracks a dusty road trip through the heart of the mid-west. A full band instrument list makes only the briefest of appearances, courtesy of the faintest suggestion of rhythm or the subtlest wall of distortion (as for the Mark Gardner-esque ‘How Long Will It Take?) adding to the country-gaze vibe still further. This is an album that is upbeat but hazy, and life affirming in the sense that you can't fail to feel blissed-out whilst listening to it and reminded that everything can wait its turn. On that basis Pan Am Down are one up.

Ever wondered what to do in the event of a nuclear threat?
A while ago I found stuff that inspired me to make this film:
Living Under the Shadow of the Nuclear Umbrella
Both artistic (ensure you get the background music!) and educational, it primarily comprises official British government civil defence advice.
Though source materials are quite aged, much remains relevant today.
