Starting up in 1989 Pandemonium kicked off by staging illegal parties. By then the promoters Paul Archer and Paul Dawkes had built up a dedicated following, and also found their first brush with the authorities over staging events. The illegal events had built up such a loyal crowd that they had caused serious traffic jams around the venue, an Old Church on lime street, Oakengates in Telford, (Some know it as 42’s now). Paul Dawkes wound up in court and was fined and ordered not to put on any more events for at least 12 months.
Suffering this blow and setback, Mark Chamberlain became the third partner in Pandemonium ably armed with his knowledge of the music industry and staging events previously in Telford. Mark had a good relationship with the council and by fronting the events they were able to gain access to a few more venues, and the legal events started in style. A small sports centre in Madeley, Telford became the humble beginnings of Pandemonium drawing around 700 people. Immediately Mark went to see the Manager at Stirchley Recreation Centre. The Manager here was the old Manager from the Oakengates Town Hall in Telford where Mark had previously staged events. It was agreed, Pandemonium could stage an event in the Stirchley Sports Hall and pulling a huge 1400 or so crowd on the first event and an unbelievable 1800 on the next, Pandemonium Became a firm favourite with Ravers attending from all over the country. Pandemonium knew they needed a move… The sheer scale of the numbers enabled discussions to be held with the Council and successfully, Telford Ice Rink was secured. Pandemonium Presents Andromeda. August Bank Holiday weekend. 1991.(http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=2523974&id=617126404 )
This was a massive step up, but it put Pandemonium into Rave history. The venue packed out with 4500 ravers and not holding back, Pandemonium hit us with Andromeda2, Telford Ice Rink yet again on November 22nd 1991. causing a real stir with all the authorities, as news reports hit the headlines and the National BBC NEWS & ITN of 6000 forged tickets sold on the streets around the country. Pandemonium completely sold out of 4000 tickets in eleven days, that was 3 and a half weeks before and another 6000 forgeries were out there and up to £100 was changing hands for a ticket. The police delayed the opening of the doors which causing a bigger queue, at 10.45pm they had around 2500 people inside with an estimated 8000 still outside. The police came in with plastic bin liners and took everything out of the office, ripped up the guest list and took over the venue. Even one of the bands playing Bizarre Inc with their smash dance track playing with knives, couldn't get in to perform.. Packing in a monstrous 6500 eventually into the rave, the event has gone down in one of the ultimate turning points for dance music and licensing. An event with this much bad publicity was bound to be stamped on and although the publicity Pandemonium felt was uncomfortable and wrong, this was when everyone was really taking notice of Pandemonium & the Andromeda events. Albeit, Pandemonium were unofficially told by the police not to contact the Private Pay Party Unit (who were a specialist unit set up specifically to cover events of this nature) for at least 6 months, they opened up their new Cub night at JJ’s Nightclub, Willenhall, Wolverhampton, every Friday night and immediately set plans for their eagerly awaited return in full scale All-nighters by planning Andromeda3 @ Donnington Park Race Track to coincide with their 6months layoff. Working with the Inspector at the Pay Party unit, keeping their noses clean, Andromeda3 was officially licensed with a capacity raised successfully and sold out with 6500 ravers on Saturday 29th June 1992. It was huge and set the dance scene alight like only Pandemonium knew how SMASHING the event with full production second to none and keeping the raw feel of the illegal warehouse raves. While putting on the Donnington show they had been planning for almost a year a show at an airfield just outside Shrewsbury called Forton airfield. The licence had been applied for well in advance and with a week to go over 4000 tickets had been sold and the 7500 capacity was expected to easily be reached. Monday before the event was the start of the set up, all the Circus tents, started to be set up over a week early, with the funfair, marquees all there everything was running smoothly, yet a discussion back at the license hearing about a 12ft fence the council wanted up reared its head again – they agreed to use the standard 2 x 6ft fences with a moat in between, but when returning from holiday Mark read the minutes from the meeting he had missed to find the council had still wanted the 12ft fence . When approached they were advised that they hadn’t agreed to this, they simply grinned and said “Yes, you did. It was agreed for an external 12 foot fence and an internal 6ft ring & It is too late as it’s in writing”. When Pandemonium told the council they would put the fence up, they turned round and said “You can’t, no one does 12ft fencing”. Pandemonium realised immediately they must have checked, so this was just a way to stop the event. Yet they found an engineer who would set the fence up, a shrewd move. Without notice, approx 5.20pm two days prior to the event, The licensing officer arrived on site and measured the inner 6ft fence (as the 12ft one had not been erected yet) & without even asking or consulting the organisers she sped off… & Within minutes, one of the FunFair owners was listening to the local Shropshire Radio news at 5.30pm stating the planned event had been read out on the radio an injunction had been served. By the time Mark was in his car it was 5.40, too late to do anything costing tens of thousands, even if they had put the fence up the plug had been pulled and the media had told everyone it was off. They scraped the money to pay their loyal fans back their ticket money even though they didn't have it, and everything they had built up had been shattered by a rushed action with authorities stating they issued the injunction as they felt the organisers were going to flagrantly ignore the licence condition and not giving them a chance. Managing to keep their club JJ’s in Wolverhampton going which started in January ’92 and ran for over 12 months. In' 93 they started the Institute (Sanctuary) in Digbeth, Birmingham. With literally a couple of days to go before the opening all-nighter, an electrical problem was causing a fire hazard which meant an immediate switch to the Hummingbird to Stage Andromeda4 and moving into the Institute the following Friday & every Friday thereafter with Club Andromeda. Andromeda5 at the institute, Andromeda 6 at the Aston Villa Leisure Centre, The Magnificent Andromeda7 & The huge show of Andromeda The Eighth Wonder both at the Institute, Andromeda 1X (9) at the Que Club Birmingham and Andromeda 10 at the massive Sheffield Arena, which received accolades around the UK resulting in winning best Light and design, and Production awards. Pandemonium had travelled the Length and breadth of the UK staging events in Chester NorthGate Arena. The Plymouth Warehouse. The Legendary 051 CLUB Liverpool with Carl Cox and Guests, The Drome Birkenhead, The Hard Dock Liverpool, and with numerous numerous tour dates over the years Pandemonium have been the UK..s number one Underground Dance Music and event Pioneers since its inception. Always striving to beak barriers in all aspects of the music and event production, Pandemonium now set a schedule of events to blow our minds once more with their experiences with today’s modern technology and new followers joining an ever loyal Pandemonium crew at their next event at the Rainbow Warehouse and Garden Arches March 21st 2009. Tickets are selling fast and on past performance, Full respect must go to the dedicated people behind Pandemonium, for their persistence to succeed and determination to continue. Most of all they should be recognised for their integrity when assessing a situation, and most importantly their honesty and allegiance to their followers, it's about time we had this attitude back with us. Welcome back Pandemonium you have been missed!
