Descended from the Musicas in the Highlands of Bogota, there is a strong sense of history running throughout the work of DJ Paotto. He may only have just officially adopted the name (it was a childhood nickname), but the emotion he brings to his underground trance tracks is already resonating with thousands of dispossessed music fans globally.
The moment that changed his life was attending an outdoor trance party in neighbouring Brazil when he was 18. Up until then Paotto had a relatively normal upbringing. His family were devoutly Roman Catholic and he was scheduled to go to university to study computing until his Damascene conversion to the ways of the trance traveller.
Although hardly well-off, Paotto began travelling to trance parties anywhere he could. Hed beg lifts, borrow equipment and steal sounds until hed soon started making a way for himself as a DJ if a somewhat limited one who wasnt really taken too seriously by the trance party inner circle. It was due to a chance meeting with one of the Flash Brothers at an outdoor trance party in Israel that he realised hed have to take up music production himself if he wanted to get anywhere in the trance scene.
After several years of heavy partying he took the decision to isolate himself back in Colombia. Picking back up on his computer skills, he taught himself Logic and set about translating his vision of the world through the medium of trance-dance. The tracks on this page are his first forays, and are as yet unsigned.
There isnt really a scene in Colombia just a few more commercial clubs in the cities that people like Erick Morillo play at, says Paotto. Outdoor parties are few. But one day I hope to attend several in Colombia, and meanwhile will try to reach as many as I can in other parts of the world not just South America.
Id like to put Colombia on the map for music as well. Were not just kidnappers and drug smugglers, or the growers of coffee for western export. Although different, were like Israel in a way. The government is one way, and the creative section of the youth population is another. One day our peace-loving people will triumph.
