Papa Joe, aka Joe Kretschmer, was born exactly one week before Paul McCartney. Although he learned to play the guitar in his 20s, he never actually wrote a song or considered performing in public until his late 50s. In 1997 he attended the songwriter's workshop at the Kerrville Folk Festival and was encouraged by successful songwriters like Chuck Pyle, Michael Johnson and Peter Yarrow. For a couple of years he partnered with another singer/songwriter, Mark Weierman, as a duet called The Ditch Lilies. Several tracks on his Open Mike CD are from their recordings. Also in the 90s he joined the Queen City Balladeers and now emcees their weekly venue, the Leo Coffeehouse.
Papa Joe plays various venues around the southwestern Ohio. He lives in the small college town of Oxford, Ohio, about 30 miles north of Cincinnati.
