Paperadio track "Hail the Summer" as featured on new Oz surf film by Aaron Wiliams
Paperadio wakes up in small town Australia. Brothers Ben and Ian Hutton go to school with Joel Duncombe in a black dusted mining town called Newcastle. They play in bands - some good, some terrible. They jump off Patterson Bridge, surf Newie beach, take girlfriends to Seal Rocks, do east coast trips with the boys, write songs and start a band together. Then Rob Scott of radio station JJJ tells them a management company in London wants to sign ‘em up. So they pack their bags and guitars and take their first flight out of Australia.
London 2003 is dark, cold and council housing grim. The mould in the bedroom walls and the sofas with no seats are no deterrant to music – the boys play some gigs, record some songs with producer Andy Bradfield and wait for the summer to come round.
It’s a long and frustrating wait. They finally realise there is no such thing as summer in London. So they change their tune, reform the band and write an album. An album wth astoundingly mature songs that reference INXS, Springsteen and U2. It’s an album weighted with Tim Winton’s writing and Ray Lawrence’s filmmaking. An Australian album with a London scarf.
Oz: Summer. Salted hair. Conversations in the heat. Sweating tinnies.
UK: Camden. Dark at 4pm. Black jeans. The BBC not the ABC.
