With their most recent studio album, “Don’t Be Like That,” Paper or Plastic proves that they are uninterested in re-creating the banal, overly careful sound of today’s pop and rock music. Several of the album’s indie rock gems, such as “Break Your Bond,“ “For Christ’s Sake,” and “Move It Away,” seem to hint at an underlying escapist manifesto. But, rather than simply throw away all efforts to produce radio prefabrications, the band’s name is indicative of an more wholesome effort—to recycle the best bits of rock n’ roll in a modern, socially and politically relevant context. Not to mention—of course—the songs are really fucking catchy.
Formed in Portland in 2003 by front man, songsmith—(and, then, freshman in high school)—David Pollock, the band went through several lineup changes, but found the right musical chemistry with Japanese guitarist Kenta Yonesaka and fellow Oregon-bred musicians Ian Millhollen (bass) and Joey Harmon (drums). Even as teenagers, Paper or Plastic had considerable success, playing the Vans Warped Tour and opening for The Tubes, Bowling for Soup, and Geoff Byrd. Before relocating to New York City in 2008, Paper or Plastic had received healthy doses of radio play and media attention, had been rated one of the “Top 10 Up-And-Coming Bands in the Northwest” and was twice named a finalist in the International Songwriting Competition. Six years later—(and some members still can’t sit in the bar)—Paper or Plastic is keeping the momentum strong and the energy level higher than ever.
Not content to use the same types of melodies, harmonies, or rhythms as most pop groups, chief songsmith David Pollock takes a classically inspired approach to writing. Don’t be surprised to hear him playing a searing piano solo in a battle with newly-joined tenor saxophonist Ian Christensen (an Oregon native, as well). Diminished and altered chords, à la Elvis Costello or David Bowie, pop up from time to time as well, adding a smart, well-cultured feel. Christensen’s hooky jazz saxophone lines (at times sounding like they’re straight out of a veteran late-night TV show band) lend Pollock's guitar-heavy arrangements a glossy sheen, (not unlike his omnipresent, meticulously shined black-leather Italian boots). Harmon and Millhollen’s rhythm section is no less formidable, boasting a Stuart Copeland meets Pino Palladino vibe…Harmon’s polyrhythms uninhibited…Millhollen’s fretless bass lines tastefully warbled. Coupled with Pollock’s lyrics that tactfully blend sarcasm, accusation, and frustration, Paper or Plastic’s music brings something new and original to the indie rock world.
So copy all your dated cassettes
And hand over your printed regrets
Thematic or theatric I could never tell
But wine-drunk weekends suit you well
