Paper Pills, is a combination of moody, experimental, pop, progressive, expressive, emotive, alternative, electronic, instrumental, vocalmental music. There are so many ways to describe Paper Pills and their fans have found many ways to, by comparisons to bands like the cure, to king crimson, to muse, to radiohead, to dredg, to the guitar sounds of U2, to the moody soundscapes of Pink Floyd.
The band was founded in Los Angeles, California, after 2 long time friends Jorge Acosta and Kenny Ramirez decided that they were meant to play music together. The band was complete when they met Ted Okasinski.
Jorge was born and raised in Los Angeles. Growing up he was exposed to many forms of music from Peruvian traditional andean sounds, to criolla music, to spanish pop/rock, to hard rock, heavy metal, 80s pop, new wave, grunge, instrumental, etc... Jorge likes to say that he is influenced by many bands and sounds. He had been in a few bands throughout the years, a closet guitar player and vocalist for a long time, he decided to take his hand at playing in a live setting. One of his earlier stabs at being the guitar player was in a project called Bassmeant or Basement or Bassment. He then went on to play in Liquid Pimp, then went on to playing solo. As a soloist, he crafted his songwriting, vocals and experimental abilities with effects, sounds, swells and mood.
Kenny, has been in several bands: Grampa Knucklehead, Gordita, Afreaka Nature and Dublika to name a few. He plays like a machine but plays with such feel, such soul. He has the uncanny ability to play drums while thinking like a guitarist, bass player and vocalist. While some musicians focus in on one aspect of playing or just their instrument, Kenny focuses in on the whole development of a song.
Ted Okasinski, orginally a transplant from Michigan, he moved to LA to pursue teaching and playing music. A talented guitar player and songwriter, he decided to take on learning and playing bass when he joined Paper Pills. It turned out that Ted would be a natural at Bass and also bring with him a fourth element to the band, piano/keyboard.
After playing the LA and California circuit, Paper Pills finally released their debut CD, Carrageenan. It was in Carrageenan that the band was able to put 8 songs together that painted a landscape of what the band was and is. After the release and a bit of touring, each member decided that they needed to explore other musical avenues by playing with other bands and working on solo material. End of summer 08, now finds the band currently back at it, working on a few EPs and figuring out next steps for the end of 08 and beginning of 09.
The trio have embarked on a journey that leaves them wanting more out of music. If you find yourself at a Paper Pills show, you will feel the mood and explosive nature of the band. Paper Pills doesn't play music to be rock stars, they play music just to rock, to emote, to feel, to make people feel, to trigger something out of nothing and change the world around them, even if it's for just a few minutes. The change is there, it's in the music and in the melodies, it's in the noise, it's in the silence and the feedback.
