This is my first 'album'. It's just fourteen of my best tracks from late 2007 and 2008 put together to save downloading individually.
What Remains
Or stream it
Here are the tracks from 'Vain''s era that didn't quite make the cut, arranged in a playlist.
Paper Truth is me; Colin.
I am from Newcastle-under-Lyme, England, but now based in Edinburgh, Scotland. In high school I was in a relatively successful classic rock band, Black Vice.
This music is created using my digital piano (or, now I'm at University, cheap ol' keyboard), my voice, my electric guitar, my electric bass guitar, various cables and my BOSS BR-600 digital recording/arranging console.
For my influences, it's probably best to go to my Friends section.
Please consider these tracks simply 'demos' and ignore the occasionally clumsy performance and production imperfections - Making every song completely perfect would be a tedious task for a non-profit one-man-band. I strongly encourage you to leave feedback, whether positive or negative. Please give me more than one chance - my songs can be reasonably eclectic. The MySpace Player will typically host my six most recent songs. Don't forget the music doesn't end where the MySpace player ends; free downloads are available.
Individual song downloads are available on last.fm; the links I have placed for streaming above. I have decided not to place things for download through MySpace as it damages the quality and tags of the files.
My songs:
Roughly in reverse chronological order of completion.
New Era - 2009
Pursuit I - June 2009 - ON MYSPACE PLAYER NOW
Cheap, quick instrumental. Sequels are possible.
Show - May 2009 - ON MYSPACE PLAYER NOW
Show me again.
After a break too long. I wish I had a more interesting title. Too many one-word ones.
Fell Out Of The Fast Life - March 2009 - ON MYSPACE PLAYER NOW
I'll pick myself up.
From the failed 'album' project.
'Zine Thing - February 2009
Abjuring their place in society.
If you don't know what Mega-Zine is, it's probably best not to ask. That's what this is about, though.
The Inevitable - February 2009 - ON MYSPACE PLAYER NOW
C'mon
Angsty mess, a couple of hours' work one day. Possibly a first in that one of the many songs it clearly plagiarises is my own. Horrible production but I can't be bothered to fix it.
Grifftheme - February 2009 - ON MYSPACE PLAYER NOW
Three songs in three days when apparently on hiatus? This is a mucky instrumental.
Blind Pilots (Demo) (The Cooper Temple Clause cover) - February 2009
I've been having fun lately playing various songs on piano and bellowing the vocals out, just for kicks. Here's one of them. Low quality recording, and a very bad cut where I merged two takes.
Routine - February 2009
Mid-pace four-part instrumental improvised one night, just about an hour's work. Yes, I'm officially on hiatus, but I came up with this tonight anyway. Thanks to Griff for the title.
'Vain' Era - 2007 to 2008
Hover - December 2008 - ON MYSPACE PLAYER NOW
How I miss you, Gravity.
Almost seven minutes? What's become of me?
Red City - November 2008
Ohgod, it's happened again.
Noise. I wonder if I can ever write a song without 'who-ah' in it.
Stay Together (first demo, sampler) (Suede cover) - November 2008
I found a piano at University with the most wonderful sound. I recorded this there and then. Here's just a tiny extract. I think I might want to do a full piano cover of this beautiful song soon, but I'm not sure. It'll take some work...
Blue Jean (David Bowie cover) - September 2008
She got Latin roots. She got everything.
Quick, messy Bowie cover just to prove to myself I can still make music in my new location. I didn't study a recording or transcription, simply performed by memory. Vocals recorded in a University music practice room, as I'll have to do in future.
Merchandise - September 2008 - ON MYSPACE PLAYER NOW
Swinging from a price tag
Another loud, messy one, but made pretty quickly. Probably the last song I'll make here at home for a good while.
Get Down! - September 2008 - ON MYSPACE PLAYER NOW
You wouldn't want to interfere
The third creation in a week. Pop song.
Walking Blind- August 2008
Shaking like kids
Here's me at the piano again. Written in about 20 minutes, recorded in about as many.
Gone - August 2008
After a break from creativity, a one-track instrumental. Probably my first recording for which I did not write down the structure or any notes (I don't mean musical notes, but I didn't write those either), and maybe the ending is weak because of this. Includes one of those pauses just about long enough to annoy the listener. Almost had lyrics.
The Face - July 2008
Commercial discharge
Very simple, only three chords for most of it. Perhaps I've overdone the loud and obnoxious songs recently - Maybe I'll try a subtle and obnoxious song next.
Bring Back The Old Last.fm - July 2008
Web 2.0 bullshit
Written and recorded in less than an hour, just a protest song at how awful the new last.fm is. YES IT'S A NOVELTY SONG.
Need It - June 2008
You're told to need it
Admittedly rushed to get it finished before I go away for two weeks (the organ is too loud and a bit distorted, and I find the lyrics dumb), but the ideas are down here. The third song I've written and recorded in this last, quite creative, week.
The Greatest Day - June 2008
Just throw it away
Probably the least instrumental tracks I've used in a long time.
Folly - June 2008 - ON MYSPACE PLAYER NOW
Faith in the fruitless
After a break which lasted too long and I can put down to A-level exams, here's a song with a sound not far from my oldskool era.
Reckless - April 2008
The damage again
A longer, rockier song to finish off April. Vocals could've been much better.
Brass in Pocket (The Pretenders cover) - April 2008
Gonna make you notice.
Created in less than an hour, it's just a simple cover of the The Pretenders song.
Shot Down - April 2008
Between self-pity and -hate
Finished just two days after the last song, a brief new-wave romp. It began as a fast-paced punk rock song but it sounded a bit samey with my recent stuff. Structurally and chordally, it reminds me of an old Black Vice work-in-progress which I'm now going to try to redevelop.
April 4th - April 2008
Just an instrumental. I hope I've not stolen anything of it; it seemed slightly familiar.
Corruption Come - March 2008
With freedom as your noose
Uh, not much to say about this one. Pretty by-the-numbers, I suppose. I should aim for some new numbers to go by for a while.
I Hear You - February 2008
I'm not inclined to feel
Written and recorded within one day, it's me trying a different genre. I had to use the silly voice, it just didn't work any other way.
(I Don't Want To Go To) Chelsea (Elvis Costello cover) - January 2008 - ON MYSPACE PLAYER NOW
Get your kicks
One of my favourite songs from one of my favourite songwriters. I hope you enjoy my interpretation.
Get Out. - January 2008 -
It's not a question
So, first song of the year. It doesn't sound as good as it did when I recorded it, and it seems to get quieter throughout, strangely. Still, here it is. Listen loud. Many parts stolen from other artists, methinks.
Song for Thor - December 2007
Jews have funny hats
Viking anthem. Actually clear vocals. Oldskool style. YES IT'S A NOVELTY SONG.
Kill Fashion - November 2007
I'm thinking of selling my friends
It sounds almost like a parody, but I'm reasonably proud of this dark, electro-ish piece. This was since reviewed on Planet Sound.
Depth Perception - October 2007
Future whirlpool
Rock song which reminds me of Queens of the Stone Age, perhaps because of its strong reliance on a single note. I don't like the vocals, but I like the middle-8.
Immersion - September 2007
Hollow, unspoken and true
An old song I wrote for Black Vice which we never got around to doing.
Equality Complex - September 2007
First newskool Paper Truth recording, a mainly-improvised instrumental. This was a test-drive of my BR-600.
'Winter' Era - 2006-2007
Apology - June 2007?
And if I'm wrong
The last of oldskool Paper Truth (which means quiet, acoustic songs).
WINTER is the name of the first formal collection of songs, or 'EP', I suppose, I made, in early 2007. The songs are called Bad Decision (Performed with Rose Timp), Gunsucker, Anorexic Animals (Written with Tabitha Wilson), Eye of the Storm (Written back when I was twelve or thirteen!) and Hit By A Car. At the moment these songs are not online as I don't think their inferior recording quality represents me fairly, and I'm yet to decide if I still like all of them. I have been meaning to re-record some of these, so perhaps I shall. All of these songs are still available on request, so let me know if you want to hear them.
That's about all I've recorded for Paper Truth. There were a few aborted songs that I temporarily uploaded just because I'd put quite some effort into them, and a small few oldskool covers just testing out the equipment, but these things aren't worth hearing. Maybe my old cover of Perfect Day will come back sometime.

Lyrics are available on request, and I am always willing to discuss any of my songs musically, some lyrically. Message me anytime.
Thanks,
Colin
