Since self releasing their debut concept
album ‘Deux’ last year, paqman have
been tweaking their big beat electronic sound during 2008.They have supported major acts such as
Akufen, Garth Emery, Endorphin, The Aston Shuffle and D’opus/Roshambo, and
received national airplay on Triple J.Their version of The Salmon Dance was runner up in a global Chemical
Brothers remix competition; it’s just to say Hayden Quinn and James Hewson have
undertaken a considerable career prior to the age of 20.....

‘…slapped me promptly up the left
side of my face … [Paqman] were cranking out the most wonderfully weird live
set I’ve heard in a long time…tweaky psychedelica, solid melodics and deep
beats.’ - inthemix.com.au ....

Lugging a
metric heap of analogue and digital gear, the boys bring an engaging and unique
touch to the electronic live show, producing huge beats, acid and catchy
melodics, twisted up between vocoded vocals and screaming effects. They provide a satisfying change from the
generic dance music coming from DJ’s and live acts.Paqman are en route to becoming the new
trendsetters in stadium electronica, pioneering a sound reminiscent of original
big beat giants The Chemical Brothers while drawing from the roughest of noize
from Ed Banger and ....Berlin.........

‘At the spry age of [19] and [20]
respectively, the duo’s Deux is a
delightful romp through a psychedelic landscape… a vibe the Chemmies themselves
would be proud of … a turn William Orbit would be happy with.’ – Allan Sko, BMA

Leaving behind
a solid Canberra following, Hayden and James have made the move to Melbourne
and begun work on their sophomore effort, entitled ‘Devastating EP’, a record
independent from and unaffected by anything outside the dimly lit machine
ridden room it’s being produced in.The
overall sound is fierce, epic and evocative but with moments of reminiscent
youthful joy, capturing the atmosphere the faulty electrics and dusty equipment
of the studio emit. Its intention is to
showcase hard hitting new electronica, though as it is more vocal than the
band’s previous works it becomes an approachable and fresh collection of
paqman’s innovative style.....
‘I arrived to find the familiar and dually
dynamic energy of Mike
Callander and Dave
Pham emanating from behind the decks in the main room, a
collaboration whose reflections of diversity and consistent rhythm are always
appreciated on the floor. The joint was already heaving by ..1am.., more packed than I have seen FFour in a
fair while, and while this comes with both pros and cons. I took it in stride
and enjoyed more than a few fine beverages at the bar before checking out the
side room. ....
And
it was in that side room, nicknamed the ‘Attick’, that the night, out of
nowhere, slapped me promptly upside the left side of the face and told me to
pay attention. Paqman,
an act I chide myself for being unfamiliar with, were cranking out the most
wonderfully weird live set I’ve heard in a long time. Synthesizing everything
from dub and low BPM drum and bass to tweaky psychedelica, solid melodics and
deep beats, their performance thoroughly confused me in the best way possible.
While the fact that it will probably be classed by most as experimental may
limit their penetration of the scene, the boys upcoming album Deux is definitely something
for general appreciators of innovative electronica to look out for. Luckily our
man Akufen was set for a 3-hour extravaganza in the main room so I was able to
enjoy Paqman til they gave up the floor to Steve Law.’-Tben, inthemix.com.au....
‘One
often doesn’t get to report on a local artiste CD release, at least within the
context of dance music, but smack me sideways with a sausage if local Chemical
Brothers inspired duo Paqman haven’t
gone and done just that. The lads James Hewson and Hayden Quinn dropped in their press paq (geddit!!!?!) the other
week and – by crikey – they’ve got promise, I tell you.....
At
the spry age of [19] and [20] respectively, the duo’s Deux is a delightful romp through a psycadelic techno
landscape.Faux Pas is an acid-tinged blippy number with punchy drums and a
vibe the Chemmies themselves would be proud of.The epic six-part Thesis
straight after takes the listener through house, then sparse bubbling synths,
before climaxing magnificently at the nine/ten minute mark with punchy electric
piano stabs and multiple drum layers.Live favourite
– and first single contender – Sc’ent’stis
(with Monster Elephante’s Josh Moloney on vocals) contains an ear worm melody,
and the down tempo Alogatise fleshes
out the experience nicely with a turn William Orbit would be happy with.....
The
lads will be having a launch in the coming months.Stay tuned. You better believe I’ll be telling you about it.’- Allan Sko, BMA Magazine....
