Bio
Parallel Lions is the result of a collaboration between Art of Fighting front man Ollie Browne, composer/sound designer Hamish Michael, and jazz drummer Sam Bates. Formed in late-2008, the band, a new vehicle for Browne's ARIA award winning song-writing, aims to take the basis of what made Art Of Fighting popular; texture, melody and a sense of reflective melancholy, and update it for the late zeroes and beyond. An emphasis on movement and rhythm, a fresh production approach, and collaboration with musicians from outside of his musical peer group has allowed Browne and Parallel Lions to reach beyond the more classic guitar band sound Art Of Fighting have found success in. Parallel Lions debut album features 11 songs of forward thinking, modern guitar-based music. From the elegant, orchestral 'Taste of Your Heart', to the marching, breezy pop of 'Telephone Line', to the latin fused outburst of 'For You', the band's philosophy is to create coherent and memorable music via unconventional avenues. Three of the album's tracks feature string sections scored by Melbourne jazz trumpeter Eugene Ball and recorded by the Silo Quartet. The recording was engineered and mixed by Sydney producer Tim Whitten (Clouds, Crow, The Necks, Powderfinger, Augie March) at Birdland and Newmarket studios May-June '09 with the financial assistance of Vic Rocks September '08 funding round. -

Here's what The Vine had to say after our Release Eve Recital:
"We finally saw the band live last night at a little pre-release show in Melbourne. It's invigorating to hear Browne's voice again, not to mention the unmistakeable songcraft that he's been pretty much nailing since the get-go. Flanked now by Hamish Michael on guitars, keys, weird sounds, comedic sparring and lots of backing vocals, it's his input that most sets the band apart from what's come before. Not to mention there being no bass guitar. The effect is a more skittery experience, not as maudlin as AOF and with perhaps more avenues to explore in future. Some of the tougher guitar interplay with drummer Sam Bates recalls Chicago post-rock dudes like Sea & Cake and Karate; all in all a propulsive yet still vividly romantic affair."
