Paramaya is intended to mean "Beside The Illusion". We were fascinated with the philosophy "Maya" in the Hindu culture, but the word by itself we knew could not suffice as a formidable figure. In the process of creating this so called entity we thought of other things which both interest us and would serve and/or aid the messages in our music. The word "paranormal" came to mind. Upon this epiphany we discovered the meaning of its prefix "para". This was our incubation. Soon after we had given birth to something which seemed to be self sustaining. It fed off of itself and taught us a thing or two about our selves, the nature of our existence, and indeed the nature of all existence. If this all seems a little pretentious...well....it is. So, enjoy.
Para- (prefix): A prefix with many meanings, including: alongside of, beside, near, resembling, beyond, apart from, and abnormal.
Maya - (Sanskrit ???? maya), in Indian religions, has multiple meanings. Maya, is the principal deity who creates, perpetuates and governs the phantasmagoria, illusion and dream of duality in the phenomenal Universe. For some mystics this manifestation is real, but it is a fleeting reality; it is a mistake, although a natural one, to believe that Maya represents a fundamental reality or Truth. Each person, each physical object, from the perspective of eternity is like a brief, disturbed drop of water from an unbounded ocean. The goal of enlightenment is to understand this — more precisely, to experience this: to see intuitively that the distinction between the self and the Universe is a false dichotomy. The distinction between consciousness and physical matter, between mind and body, is the result of an unenlightened perspective.
Maya is the limited, purely physical and mental reality in which our everyday consciousness has become entangled. Maya is held to be an illusion, a veiling of the true, unitary Self — the Cosmic Spirit also known as Brahman. The concept of Maya was expounded in the Hindu scriptures known as the Upanishads. Many philosophies or religions seek to "pierce the veil" of Maya in order to glimpse the transcendent truth, from which the illusion of a physical reality springs.
We struggle with ego and attempt to transcend that which, fundamentally, cannot be transcended and/or "figured out". The best we can do is realize that our place is neither below nor beyond ourselves. It is all encompassing and as true to form as we can be....we strive to walk BESIDE THE ILLUSION.
