Installation Preparation:
- Be sure you are the administrator on your computer and that you are connected to the Internet.
- Make sure all other programs and browsers are closed on your computer.
Installation Process:
- First, download the software from www.myspace.com/parentcare.
- Click “RUN” when prompted to, or save the file and run it later, if you prefer.
(Note to Windows XP Users: The ParentCare Beta software requires Microsoft’s .NET Framework 2.0 to be installed. If the ParentCare Beta software installer detects your system needs the .NET Framework, it will direct you to the correct download location. Download and install that update before proceeding. After completion, double click the ParentCare Beta software download again to continue the install.)
- You will be greeted by the installer’s Welcome screen. Click “NEXT”.
- Click “I ACCEPT” to accept the terms of the End-User’s License Agreement, and then click “NEXT”.
- Click “NEXT” to install the software in the default location, “C:\Program Files\ParentCare\”
- You will be asked to create a password and a secret question. This is to ensure that no one can uninstall the program without the installer’s approval. (The secret question must be something your teen cannot answer, as this will be used to verify the identity of the parent for password retrieval, if necessary.)
- Confirm installation by clicking “INSTALL”.
- You will see the progress bar as the installation proceeds. Once the installation is complete, click “FINISH” to complete the ParentCare Beta software installation.
- There will be a reboot prompt. Remember to save any unfinished work before restarting your computer, and click “YES” to continue. If you can’t reboot right away, please remember to do so in order for the beta software to finish installation. After the restart, you will see the ParentCare Beta software icon in your systems tray (lower right corner of the screen) which indicates the software is installed and tracking.
Once the ParentCare Beta software is installed, it will automatically launch whenever the computer starts, and remain running as long as it’s on. To open the user interface, you must double click the ParentCare software icon in the system tray. The icon is illustrated below as a blue checkmark over a white circle.

The software will automatically track any access to MySpace.com from all the user accounts on your computer. You may check on your teen’s activities by double clicking the ParentCare system tray icon to view the events.

4. Why am I seeing an orange System Warning or red System Error Indicator on the ParentCare Beta user interface? [Hide Answer]
The ParentCare Beta software has built-in status monitoring that displays an indicator showing whether there is a condition you should be aware of. To view the software status, open the ParentCare Beta software windows by double clicking the icon in the system trey and clicking “System Error” in the lower right corner of the interface.
Using the System Status Feature
If you see the system status button showing a Yellow Warning, or a Red Error indicator, click the button to view the system status log.
Clicking on the system status button prompts you for the password you entered when you installed the ParentCare Beta software.
A detail window opens once you enter your password. It will look like this
Viewing the status log will clear the error or warning status, and return the system status indicator to the green “OK” display.
Status Messages and Their Meaning
The OK status means that the system is operating normally.
The Yellow Warning status means one of the following:
- The ParentCare Beta software system self test failed. If you see this, you should look at the log and see if this error occurred at a time when your teen was using the computer. This may indicate that your teen is attempting to bypass the ParentCare Beta software.
- The self-test may fail and then start working again. In this case, the failure has likely not permanently affected the ParentCare Beta software’s ability to function. However, if the self-test continually fails, this means that the ParentCare Beta software is probably no longer functioning correctly. To fix this problem, you will need to uninstall and reinstall the ParentCare Beta software.
- Someone entered the wrong password when attempting to view the system status log.
- A mandatory software upgrade for the ParentCare Beta software is available. If you see this, you should go to the ParentCare Beta software site, www.myspace.com/parentcare, and download the new version of the ParentCare Beta software

7. How can I contact MySpace to lock or delete my teen’s profile? [Hide Answer]
8. Why doesn’t the information listed in the ParentCare user interface change? [Hide Answer]
