After a great night in August featuring DJ 3000 and James Ruskin, Closer returns to Hidden in Vauxhall for our final party of 2008 and it promises to be another superb session of original techno music. Our special guest is the one and only Speedy J who’ll be making a rare visit to the UK to play at Closer. Joining him will be Ben Sims, one of the heroes of the UK scene – Ben played an impromptu set for Closer last year, but this time around he'll be in full effect.
Support comes from resident Steve Strawberry who is fast becoming one of the leading lights of the London techno scene. To quote Ben Sims, “Out of the up-and-coming DJs I'd say Steve Strawberry is the strongest I've seen recently, definitely a name to look out for.” Joining them will be the Strange Worlds and Come Up underground crews. Expect two rooms of music, top quality sound and visuals brought in especially for the night, decent drink prices and continental opening hours running from midnight to morning, and you have a party to be reckoned with. Unrestricted, unrestrained techno – just the way we like it.
With just about every man and his dog claiming to play techno these days, the case for Closer has never been stronger and only the world’s very best DJs are invited to play – the true keepers of the techno flame. Quite simply, original techno music at its best.
Closer is designed to do exactly what it says on the tin. It’s about techno in its purest, rawest sense – unrestricted, unrestrained – delivered by its finest practitioners up close and personal. Techno in its many shapes and guises has become the leading international language of the dancefloor from beach festivals in Brazil to the underground sound of Europe’s coolest clubs. The scene’s leading DJs are in such demand on the global circuit that we barely get to see them here in the UK and that’s usually confined to the bigger clubs and festivals. All well and good, of course, but there’s nothing quite like dancing to techno when the lights are low, the atmosphere is intense and you can see the whites of the DJs’ eyes!
The intimate main room at Hidden works a treat for techno and a top quality sound system will be installed. There’ll also be a VJ, while over in the bar area there’s an alternative soundtrack of house, tech and electro proved by Strange Worlds (Darko, Rupeski, Ty-Fi, Prof. Stretch, Mr. Rakas), Come Up (Paul Lindley, Cush) and Tim Gale. Closer will also be operating continental opening hours starting at midnight and running through till 8am to suit the late night culture that has become such a feature of London’s club scene. Hidden has an excellent sheltered outdoor smoking area too.
Strange Worlds, the guys behind the notorious Uncle Fester parties, will also be hosting the official after party taking place at The Lightbox just five minutes walk away in Vauxhall. This unique venue encased in LED lighting has recently hosted parties by Tiefschwarz among others as well as the Contakt/m-nus after party, and a superb line-up has been confirmed including special guest Charlton Ravenberg from the Netherlands. Speedy J: Jochem Paap is one of the true legends of techno and has been at the forefront of the scene for over 15 years recording for labels like Plus 8, Music Man, Warp and Novamute. Most recently, he’s established his own Electric Deluxe imprint while continuing to be a major player on Richie Hawtin’s Plus 8. We’re very excited to have the Dutch master join us for his first date in London in several years.
Ben Sims: one of the UK’s most respected techno ambassadors, Ben Sims plays at all the major European clubs and festivals, and has a huge following. He also runs his own Theory Recordings and Hardgroove labels and is the man behind the Split parties and radio show. Nicknamed the 'three-deck master', this will also be a rare London appearance from him.
Steve Strawberry: coming up from the London underground and the man behind the popular Tilted Disco parties, Steve Strawberry is a man you’ll be hearing a lot more of over the coming months with his incendiary turntable skills. He’s also the Closer resident and took the Glastonbury Festival by storm with his exciting new multimedia project, ‘The House’.
Strange Worlds: these guys have been making serious waves on the London underground scene and will be playing a special four-hour live show using turntables, CDJ-1000s, Ableton, keyboards and special effects. Expect to hear plenty of original and exclusive material.
