Springtime at Westville Village “A must to see and the place to be”
LUMPKIN, GA. April 16, 2009 - Historic Westville welcomes Spring with two weeks of traditional life activities to educate and delight everyone. During the second week enjoy slave stories, Cherokee culture and period music. Westville prepares for the spring with its living history demonstrations of sheep shearing, wagon rides, weaving, quilting, open-fire cooking, candle dipping, soap making, and traditional music. The Kiser House Café will settle the appetites of the hungry bunch with plenty of good food. The Bibb City Ramblers will perform bluegrass music on May 2 and 3.
Take a stroll through cultivated gardens laced with bright-hued nineteenth century plantings that produce a range of colors only seen on an artist palette. Vegetable gardens and the planting of cotton for our fall harvest can also be part of your day.
For the second week (April 30-May 3, 2009) Westville brings “History Alive” at our new slave cabin with African American storyteller, Yomi Goodall, who will tell the history and customs, dancing, drumming and music of Africans in the new world. Participation in dance and songs welcome.
Master blacksmith Donnie Ross, descendent of Chief John Ross, shares stories of Cherokee culture, tells about the “Trail of Tears”, and participate in a Cherokee Friendship dance.
Listen to the traditional music of Linda Franklin and Jeanette Jasper as they play the hammered dulcimer, guitar, concertina, accordion and psaltery flows through the village.
