World AIDS Day

December
1, 2009 is World AIDS Day. There are nearly 33 million persons living
with HIV/AIDS worldwide. In the United States, over a million Americans
are living with HIV. In the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) there
are over 23,000 Veterans getting care for HIV. The VHA is the largest
provider of HIV care in America. VHA health care providers are skillful
and experienced in caring for persons living with HIV/AIDS. While most
Veterans in HIV care are male, VHA provides care to over 600 female
Veterans living with HIV.

Because of advances in
treatment, persons with HIV/AIDS are living longer. The average age of
Veterans who are getting care for HIV is 53 years. To benefit from
improved treatments, it is important for persons to be diagnosed in a
timely manner. It is best if a diagnosis is made before the virus
causes silent and serious damage to the immune system.
