A big thanks to everyone who came out and made our Summerdance performance with Orquestra de Samba a HUGE hit!
Hi, I'm Rachel, the founder of Passista's Samba Dance Group. By way of information: I am a life long lover of Brazilian music and dance and have trained extensively with renowned Chicago Queen of Samba, Ana Ribeiro, studied under internationally recognized choreographer and instructor, Edilson Lima of Sao Paulo, Brazil and famous TV star and Rainha de Bateria (Samba Queen) from Rio de Janeiro, Dill Costa. I have taught for Evanston Escola at the Giordano Dance Center and participate in many educational performances and workshops in public schools as well as other educational and professional engagements.
The Passistas samba dancers have performed throughout the Midwest and made several appearances for regional and nationally televised programming on Univision and Telemundo, including guest appearances on Escandalo T.V. and Control, dancing samba in costume. We work with different costume designers who design and make all of our headpieces and alternate (non-beaded) dance costumes and travel to Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro Brazil annually to personally select hand-made designs so that all of our outfits are brand new or in excellent condition. We can provide whatever the event requires - ranging from the liberal to the ultra-conservative: Rio style costumes, navel covered/uncovered, covered bottoms (skirt or pants), etc. Our group performs for Universities, corporate events, weddings, galas, fund raisers, children's events and churches! All dancers employed are professional, young, lovely and fit (photos showcased are NOT touched up nor photoshopped).
Passistas only performs with the most highly regarded musicians in the Chicago music scene (Brazilian and non): Planeta Azul Carnaval and Brazilian Jazz Guys. The Planeta Azul roster of musicians consists of an impressive and diverse group: Heitor Garcia, Yuri Moncada, Felipe Fraga, Clarice Cast, Luciano Antonio...some of whom have performed together for over 15 years and are natives of Brazil. The Brazilian Jazz Guys is a group specializing in Bossa Nova /Brazilian Jazz and percussion. This musically rich group of talented artists brings together guitarist and vocalist Luciano Antonio, percussionist Felipe Fraga, bassist Andre Azoubel, guitarist Edinho Gerber and drummer Heitor Garcia, among others, all masters of their respective craft who come with over 35 years of formal training and have the innate sense needed to achieve the passion of this music and beat. This young and dynamic group has been heating up the Brazilian and Latin music scene for the last five years. Individually and together they are among the most commissioned artists for collaborative efforts and works, which include professional recordings, concerts, and other social and private events: recent engagements include the Jakarta International Jazz Festival, opening performances for Caetano Veloso, Vinicius Cantuaria, Virginia Rodrigues, Howard Levy, Roberto Assad, Bobby Broom, Bob Lizik, Yolanda Adams and Joe Vasconcelos, the Chicago Mayor’s Office of Special Events, The Democratic Convention of 2004, and several commercial releases throughout the Mid-west.You may e-mail rachel.montiel@gmail.com for music samples. Dropping by to say hello. Wanted to mention, we have added some tracks to the site from our June 4th recording at UMKC. Crossing my fingers in hopes you like them as they are not mastered, nor mixed, however are in rough format. Best, ~joe Heres a pic from Troost Fest www. myspace. com/themelektausensemble
