About PAT KAY and The GAJOS

Pat Kay offers the Portuguese language its flexibility and richness. He takes us in a world easily and intensely switching back and forth between French and Portuguese, between the two languages, the two cultures. Eager for encounters, and Paris being a favourable city for exchanges, he came across Dan Inger. An old dream was going to come true: the project Montmartre. And the Gajos would be born as well, when Jap and his guitar joined them. The complete Gajos Collective also includes Mitch on the drums, François on the bass guitar, Victor de Oliveira on the piano and Valérie Corcovado who sings opposite Pat Kay while also being his shadow voice. Influences intertwine according to encounters and friends: meeting Adolfo Luxuria Canibal (Mao Morta, Mecanosphere), and Franz Treichler (The Young Gods) was decisive, just as his meeting with Marco de Oliveira and Rodolphe Burger (Kat Onoma). Pat Kay remembers one unique moment of poetry when Rodolphe Burger, having a passion for Fernando Pessoa's poems, recited one of them, Opium, for him. Calvin Russel's tattoos that tell the tale of this friendly and rough guy whom he met one late afternoon. Antonio Manuel Ribeiro, the veteran UHF's leader: a tall, simple and approachable man. Yann Lavoix who wrote La Nasse, one of Montmartre lyrics. Fred Alpi, a lbertarian globe-trotter rock musician he met thanks to Jap. Montmartre mixes languages and cultures. Musics and texts mixed in harmony with both rigour and talent. A piece of work that is to be listened to as a whole, everyone's life arises from it, as a gift to anyone. Pressure, the first track takes one into the group's universe. "Now that Winter has come / I realise I got the city wrong / I feel an icy wind inside / I feel my blood petrifying. Gradually, the other songs unfold and build a world in which the texts are often ironical and sometimes caustic. And Pat Kay's voice paves the way to a kaleidoscopic vision of a world that is familiar to everyone. The influence of the Pink Floyd and Serge Gainsbourg meets with an atmosphere that reminds one of Nick Cave, Tom Waits, the Tindersticks or Bashung. The lyrics are set in a minimalistic musical shrine allowing us to fully grasp their essential meaning. On stage, the constant flow grows almost hypnotic, sometimes collides with the musicians interentions or Valérie's voice. Thus, Pat Kay and the Gajos keep their balance on a tight-rope. Funambulists. Equilibrists. Montmartre on a wet winter night. ________________________________________________________________ PAT KAY & The GAJOS > BIO _____ Travaillant autour de trois langues et d'autant de cultures, Pat Kay a commencé par écrire des textes pour divers artistes avant de se jeter dans le grand bain, épaulé dans sa démarche par des amis compositeurs tels que Dan Inger Une fois l'idée lancée, il ne restait plus qu'à trouver des musiciens pour emmener le projet sur les routes et pourquoi pas en studio. C'est alors qu'arrivèrent les Gajos qui ne sont autres que JAP que l'on avait connu chez le libertaire Fred Alpi à la guitare, Mitch Aubinais à la batterie, François Bissery à la basse et Victor de Oliveira aux claviers, tout ce joli monde étant rejoint in fine par Valérie Corcovado qui fait bien plus que d'assurer les churs en mettant également un peu de son âme dans les morceaux Et le tour était joué, il ne restait plus qu'à enregistrer " Montmartre ", un album qui, comme son nom ne l'indique pas, est bien plus international que parisien. Il aura fallu du temps à Pat Kay pour en arriver à cet album, du temps qui aura été marqué par des concerts en et hors de France et par des rencontres essentielles, avec Rodolphe Burger (Kat Onoma) par exemple, ou encore avec Calvin Russell, Yann Lavoix, Adolfo Luxúria Canibal de Mão Morta et Mécanosphère Et le résultat n'en est que plus grand, plus abouti, plus charnel serait on tenté de dire. Entre pop et rock avec une dose d'electro et une dose de blues folk pour parfaire le tout, Pat Kay & The Gajos nous livrent un ouvrage bourré de couleurs et d'émotions, le gris attachant d'un ciel hivernal parisien d'où s'échappent quelques sentiments particulièrement forts, le bleu horizon de l'Atlantique vu du Portugal d'où est originaire Pat, le rouge feu d'un incendie qui semble gagner un artwork aussi simpliste que prenant Avec sa voix chaude et ses textes qui passent de l'Anglais au Portugais et du Portugais au Français de façon plus que naturelle, Pat Kay imprime une direction générale que se contentent de suivre ses musiciens, véritables artisans d'un son qui se veut parfait en tout point. C'est jeune et moderne, c'est frais et engageant, on appellera ça au choix musique du monde, pop rock lusitanien ou tout simplement chanson à thème mais si une seule chose est importante au final, c'est bien le plaisir que l'on ressent en écoutant " Montmartre ". Fred Alpi, o rocker globe-trotter e libertário, conhecido graças ao JAP Montmartre Uma simbiose de músicas e de textos realizada com rigor e talento. Uma obra que se escuta como um todo. É a vida de todos, que surge oferecida a cada um. Pressure, o primeiro tema, instala o cenário. « Agora que o Inverno armou a cilada/Encontro-me na cidade errada/No interior, um vento gélido a soprar/Cá dentro, tenho o sangue a coagular ». Progressivamente, os outros temas vão chegando e construindo um universo no qual os textos incisivos são ora irónicos ora cáusticos. E a narração de Pat Kay é uma espécie de prisma, de caleidoscópio do mundo onde todos se encontram e reconhecem. Arranjos « Pink Floydianos », interpretações algo « Gainsbourianas » ingredientes banhados em ambiências que fazem muitas vezes lembrar as de Nick Cave, Tom Waits, Tindersticks ou Alain Bashung. Os textos encontram assim uma textura musical minimalista que lhes permite expôr todo o sentido, toda a substantífica medula. Em palco, o débito constante, quase hipnótico, é subitamente rasgado, ver sublimado pelos solos dos músicos ou da corista Valérie.
