Rheō is the Greek term ῥέω, meaning ‘to flow’.
Rheō is the root of the word ‘Rhythm’.
Rheō is also a genre-bending new recording by percussionist Patrick Graham, an eclectic, cinematic, and expansive collection of original pieces for percussion, frame drums, taiko, vielle à roue, bamboo flutes, dan moi, melodica, pots, pans, toy accordion, and restless fingers. The disc features outstanding collaborators Ben Grossman (vielle à roue & electronics), Kaoru Watanabe (Japanese and western flutes), Nicholas Williams (bamboo flutes), Debashis Sinha (percussion) and On Ensemble (taiko & percussion).
Rheō is also new music performance project directed by percussionist Patrick Graham, a cross-cultural and multi-faceted exploration of rhythm. For the Rheō project, Patrick is joined onstage by vielle à roue player Ben Grossman (Guelph, ON) and Japanese and western flutist Kaoru Watanabe (New York), as well as contemporary dancer Tomomi Morimoto (Montreal). Rheō feature adventurous group pieces and solos, live electronics, and improvisation in a performance that explores the flow of pulse and sound, movement and colour, and the constant flow between cultures.
Canadian multi-percussionist Patrick Graham blends tradition, experimentation, composition and improvisation in an exceptionally versatile approach that blurs boundaries. Patrick’s cross-cultural percussion style reflects his training in Western classical and contemporary music and his extensive explorations of Mediterranean, Irish, South Indian, and Japanese rhythms, including studies with teachers Pierre Béluse (Montréal), Glen Velez (New York), Carlo Rizzo (Grenoble), Trichy Sankaran (Toronto), and Taichi Ozaki (Tokyo). As a creator of projects such as the duo GaPa with Ganesh Anandan, and as a collaborator with groups such as Autorickshaw, On Ensemble, and La Nef, Patrick's unique sound reflects his experience in multiple genres of music and his profound fascination with the power of rhythm. Patrick is an endorser of Cooperman Drums and Schlagwerk Percussion.
Hi Patrick, it Looks like you had a fabulous time at NAFDA. Saw a lot of photos of you on facebook...much of the frame drum community hopped over to facebook. It is much easier to keep posted or post events and share. Thought I would plant a seed.
