My current gig with Guy King is a mix of blues, R&B, soul, funk and jazz although these genres are really all just different shades of the blues. On any given night you might hear us play tunes by Albert King, Ray Charles, Percy Mayfield, B.B.King, Albert Collins, Muddy Waters, Jimmy Smith, T-Bone Walker, Johnny "Guitar" Watson and Willie Kent as well as original compositions from myself and Guy.
Everything soulful is fair game.
HAVING BEEN INFLUENCED by my moms 50's rock 'n roll records, my dads folk and classic rock records, gospel singing relatives and a trombone playing preacher, I took up the trombone at age 7. I played in the elementary and high school marching band, jazz band and symphony orchestra until about age 15 when I found a bass guitar in the attic of my house. My dad brought it back from Thailand during the Vietnam War but never learned to play. A guitar playing friend showed me a few basics and it was on! The trombone was no longer cool so I cashed it in to buy my own bass guitar and by 18 years of age I was gigging and recording with local rock and original alternative bands. The Rock/Pop thing lasted a few years until in 1990 I saw BB King at a blues festival in Philadelphia. That really woke me up to where my musical roots came from. I, like so many white kids, had no idea that Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones didn't write those songs. Once I heard the real thing, I couldn't get enough. So I listened to all of the blues records that I could get my hands on and joined a local blues band, Krypton City Blues Review. This gave me the experience and confidence to move to Chicago where I was fortunate to meet, play, and travel internationally with such blues legends as Willie Kent, Eddy "the Chief" Clearwater, Bonnie Lee, Barkin' Bill Smith and many others.
I am currently playing with Guy King(see "Friend" link below)and pursueing my own unique and everchanging musical direction.
ABOUT THE SONGS; I'll be rotating tracks that I've played on from Chicago blues artists, alternative bands from my younger days, and even a collaboration with Harrisburg PA's poet laureate Gene Hosey.
"Livin It" is from the new debut CD of the same name from Guy King. It is available for purchase or download at Guyking.net, CD Baby, iTunes and Amazon.com
"Jody's..." is from The Chicago Blues Harmonica Project /Diamonds in the Rough. That's Omar Coleman on harmonica and vocals.
"He Don't Love You" is also from the Diamonds in the Rough CD. That's Dusty Brown on Harp and Vocals. He originally recorded that song in 1949.
"Hearts Don't Bend" was written by guitarist/vocalist John Moquin, founder of Radio 4 and Dear John. That's Jeff Calvin on lead guitar. He went on to front his own blues and jazz bands and also writes occasionally for Blues Review magazine. "Good Man Feeling Bad" is a Willie Kent song that I like to sing. It was recorded live with the Guy King Band for a radio broadcast on WNUR. THANKS FOR LOOKING AND LISTENING.

Hey Patrick, thanks for the comment! Yes, Bowie and Fishbone are in the mix, but they have to share their seats with quite a lot of other people. Some of them haven't been wholly digested yet, and if you listen closely, you can hear them beg for mercy. It's very refreshing to hear you play the blues. You're aware that to us Europeans "Chicago" and "The Blues" are synonymous, and some day I'll come and capture some of the atmosphere. Enjoy your next gigs! Jan
