Paula Clarke, a Jamaican who migrated to Canada in 1975, is creating a sensation in the Canadian music industry as far as reggae is concerned. She went there and in less than five years of singing, matured to earn a nomination as top reggae artiste and to win for herself, the award as top new comer on the reggae scene with her album “didn’t I blow Your Mind” at Canadian Music Awards held in 1984.
Paula spent her first five years in the small farming district of Redwood in St. Catherine before moving into Kingston with her parents.
In Kingston, she attended the Seaward Primary School, Stratford High and Fitz Henley Secretarial Schools. Leaving school, she worked at the Kingston Public Hospital for five years as a clerk typist.
It was then that she got married to a Canadian, Ronald Clarke. She migrated and worked for a year at a factory, during which time she did some singing at night clubs.
Paula like many of our popular singers, started to sing in the church. She said, “I had never performed in Jamaica in any form of entertainment except in the church. I used to sing at fund-raising concerts and for my friends.”
Her father was secretary for the West Central Citizens Association, and several concerts used to be held at the local churches to raise money for community projects.
Paula said that during her first performance in Canada, she was very shy. “I was very shy; I would sing the songs one right after the other. I never rapped with the audience. However they applauded me and that gave me a lot of confidence which I used to my advantage. My other source of encouragement at that time came from my husband. When he realized that I could sing, he and a friend of his assisted me in recording a song. They co-produced my first album, “Didn’t I Blow your Mind” which became a big hit.
Paula said that since she got the award, number of offers had been coming in for her to do concerts. She said that calls kept coming in from people who wanted her to judge contests and to appear on shows. “Right now I have a very big package ahead of me and I am only here to do a show and get some rest,” she said.
Paula is to make her first appearance on stage in Jamaica as guest performer on Boxing Day December 26, at the Stony Hill Heart Academy. The show is produced by Carlton Smith of music Wave Promotions. She will be with a line up of other top Jamaican artistes
Since Paula started her music career, she has had voice training which she said has improved her vocals.
The Libran who weighs 110 Lbs and the mother of two children- Latoya and Omar said that all her recordings are done in Jamaica at Dynamic Sounds, and are distributed by Arabic Music.
For the future, Paula hopes to produce at least two albums per year. She said that already she had been visiting Jamaica two times per year to do recording. Paula has performed on stage with noted reggae artists such as Black Uhuru, Delroy Wilson, Blues Busters, Big Youth, Ruddy Thomas, and the We the People Band.
A friend is someone we lean on, When we are feeling weak. A friend is someone who help's us, Find what it is we seek. A friend is someone who looks out for you, In all they say and do. A friend is someone you don't have to tell, For they already knew. A friend is someone who would, Go that extra mile. A friend is someone who show's us, A heart that does truly smile. A friend is someone who'll stand by you, And help you through your day. A friend is someone who'll show you, There is always a way. A friend is someone who'll dry your tears, When you feel you have to cry. A friend is someone who'll pull you through, When the tide feels ever so high. A friend is someone who'll be there, Until the very end. A friend is someone who'll show us, How that broken heart they'll mend. A friend is someone who give's us, Understanding, Joy and Grace. A friend is someone who makes this world, Truly a wonderful place.
Thanks for being my friend.
