Sounds Like
When I'm playin' the blues people tell me I sound like one of the old
Fort Worth blues guys on Jacksboro Hwy in the '30's, '40's, and '50's
and 60's. That really makes me happy! I'm certified as they say!
Playin' jazz I'm told I have a Mickey Baker / Charlie Christian /
Howard Roberts thing goin' on. I like to play jazz with a rigorous hard
bop style but interspersed with a little hillbilly humor like the
western swing guys or Jimmy Bryant. I think of this style as "Desert
Jazz" or "West Coast Cool".
But the funny thing is what I do best is sort of melodic pop guitar.
It's that Beatles thing in me and this is by far what comes to me most
naturally.
So that's me - a pop guitarist distilled through the rich history of
Fort Worth blues and jazz and all the great guitarists I met and played
with on the road with Johnny Reno's band. Oh, and my North Texas State
experience? I tried to learn as much as I could there with out letting
it screw me up.
Compositionally I'm all over the place. Depends on the project / film /
band.
A musician who has worked or performed with an impressive and as
diverse a group of artists as Chris Isaak, Robert Rodriguez, Brother
Jack McDuff, The Gospel Hummingbirds and Shawn Colvin, I've been
blessed with these opportunities all because I was naive enough from a
young age to beleive I could make a living doing what I love. All this
seems the more improbable considering the vocations of my parents and
siblings - nurses, pilots, accountants, lawyers, engineers and
stay-at-home moms! Man - what happened to me? I never really "decided"
to be a musician, it's just what I've always done and what I always knew I wanted to do.

Here is the opening scene of the Robert Rodriguez film "Roadracers" for which I did the score along with Johnny Reno. We also did a few pile driving roadhouse rave ups like this song "My Mistake!" Our credits roll at the 3:45 mark.
Also, that's me and Johnny aka "The Rumblers" in this scene with Salma Hayek and David Arquette. I'm the greaseball playing the Danelectro.
Hey Paul! It's been a while..How's things? The band is releasing it's Debut record in the next month. I'll send you a copy to Texas. We will try to play in SBSW next year..Let's see...
Cool. I'm glad you got to check out the small town spookyness. The Baker holds a special place in my heart...it's so very neglected. Did you take photos?
watched planet terror last night (my sole contribution to halloween festivities), and it always makes me laugh to see Johnny knock a guard out with his sax... classic
This is Donald Rubinstein's seminal score to George A. Romero's jousting biker flick that has been in demand ever since the film came out 27 years ago.
As a special treat, Donald has signed the first 100 covers. As usual, please limit 2 signed CDs per customer.
