PAUL FOX - OBITUARY - THE GUARDIAN Energetic and versatile guitarist from the second wave of punk • Monday October 22 2007 As guitarist and co-songwriter with the Ruts, Paul "Foxy" Fox, who has died aged 56 of cancer, helped create some of the best loved and most enduring work of the punk era. The Ruts, who came together in 1977, were among the best of the second wave of British punk bands, inspired by the likes of the Sex Pistols and the Clash. Enthusiastically supported by John Peel (obituary, October 27 2004), Babylon's Burning, a typically forthright commentary on the discontent in Britain's cities, reached number seven in the 1979 charts, and the follow-up, Something That I Said, also charted high. Their first album, The Crack, was a classic. Like many in that second wave, the Ruts hailed not from the art school milieu of the first wave but from the London suburbs. Decent musicians, they had schooled themselves in jazz-funk and pub rock. Fox played a pivotal songwriting role, and quickly became a model punk guitarist at a time when the three-chord thrash was the height of many of his contemporaries' ambitions. The Crack showcased his menacing, often haunting, style to great effect, but also revealed his versatility; he was a lover of reggae and could switch styles with ease. Fox was born in Bermondsey, south London, the son of publican parents. The family moved to Hayes, Middlesex, when he was a child. He laid the foundations of his musical career in a hippy commune in Anglesey during the early 1970s, where he formed a progressive rock band called Aslan with two Hayes schoolfriends, Malcolm Owen and Paul Mattocks. When the commune disbanded in 1975, Fox returned to London and joined a funk band, Hit & Run, which played the pub circuit. By the end of 1977, with punk raging through the capital, an energised Fox had teamed up with Malcolm Owen (vocals), John Jennings (bass) and Dave Ruffy (drums) to form the Ruts. Fired by Fox's furious guitar-playing and the charismatic Owen's vocals, within a year the Ruts had made a significant impact. A loveable and lively character, Fox immersed himself in the horseplay and high jinks of nationwide Ruts tours, much of it with their kindred spirits, the Damned. With Owen, he was most often the focus of attention on stage. But the heady days did not last. In 1980, Owen died of a heroin overdose, a drug that Fox would also struggle with in future years. After much agonising, Fox and the two other surviving band-members continued, as Ruts DC - with Fox sharing some of the vocals - until late 1982, after the release of the patchy Animal Now album, and the dub reggae Rhythm Collision that further enhanced Fox's credentials, but sold poorly. Fox then joined a west London band called Dirty Strangers, which he freely described as "a budget-priced Rolling Stones"; they recorded two albums on which Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood guested. Richards was a fan - they toured together briefly in the US - and Fox was also openly admired by the likes of Pete Townshend and Jimmy Page. After forming his own shortlived band, Choir Militia, in 1983, Fox played with rock group Screaming Lobsters in 1987 and with Fluffy Kittens, an Indie outfit, from 1991 to 1994. He then went into what he called semi-retirement in Ruislip, Middlesex. Carpentry became his main source of income, but he recorded a couple of low-profile singles with the ad hoc Chelsea Punk Rock Allstars (1997) and the ska artist Lauren Aitken (2000). Last year, the Bad Manners frontman Buster Bloodvessel convinced Fox to form a new touring band, Foxy's Ruts, which, featuring his elder son Lawrence on drums, toured Europe and played at the Punk and Disorderly Festival in Berlin. Fox's final performance was at a London Ruts reunion with Ruffy, Jennings and US punk legend Henry Rollins on vocals. Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket His last work was LOCKDOWN, another dub reggae album, recorded earlier this year with the DUBCATS band. In 2000 he separated from his wife Sharon, but they were latterly on good terms. She survives him, as do his sons, Lawrence and William. Paul Fox, guitarist, born April 11 1951; died October 21 2007. Second time around

It wasn't easy tracking Paul down. Lawrence and William had long since left school, and I knew Sharon (Foxy's ex-wife) had moved away. I made a concerted effort over the summer of 2006, finally catching up with him at the Crown and Treaty. Thankfully, to see Foxy's Ruts. And how good was that? To see Paul playing his finest music in the company of Lawrence - one of the quietest, polite and well - mannered students I have ever met: a credit to his father. Now a powerhouse drummer!
It transpired that the idea to put the band together and get it out on the road was Buster's (or Douglas Trendle as he is on his birth certificate)- Thank You Big Man!
I can still see Foxy, nervously hopping around from one foot to the other, fag in hand (always a fag in hand) "Awright, And, 'ow you doin? Lol's around somewhere, Doug's supposed to be comin' up too. 'Ow you doin' anyway? Listen I just gotta sort somefink aht, back in a mo'"
And what a night.
It was a privilege to have been there

Memories of Paul 1

I was a Ruts fan from the moment I first heard 'Babylon's Burning' at the age of 17,on the John Peel show. I remember playing “The Crack” again and again in the foul flat I shared in Stoke Newington with Sade’s ex-band members. I can’t think of a single person I played it to over the years who didn’t like it. It was a record which spoke to me on lots of levels, lyrically and musically; but key to it all was the distinctive guitar sound and innovative playing of Paul Fox, at the time, simply a name on the reverse of the record sleeve. but to become someone I am proud to have been able to call a friend.

Paul was a smashing, intelligent man with an effortless magnetism and infectious good humour. What was significant when I later got to know him, was how quickly and neatly he sidestepped that potentially arkward fan/hero relationship. It simply was not an issue. He was always modest about his achievements - which were substantial; but time will tell.

Don't give up the Day Job!

I continued to sing the praises of this special band through the '80s and '90s after Malcolm Owen’s untimely death (As well as saddened, I recall being so cross with him. Why? The Ruts were smarter than that) The last album, “Rythmn Collision” excited me in its own way as much as “the Crack” and for me remains one of the most underrated records of the decade. Shortly after the band's final demise I met Ruffy through close friend, Simon Lewis. He was pessimistic about the chances of the band playing together again. But it was about 5 years later, as a teacher in West London, quite by accident I discover that for a year and a half, unknown to me I have been teaching Foxy's son Lawrence. I had to engineer a meeting!
My chance came with the school's annual Christmas concert. Lol was begining to show some promise on the drums, and was appearing on the bill. As "The Staff Band" so were we. (If any schoolteachers' staff band had ideas above their station....)
Proud Dad Paul was there to see his son's debut. At the afternoon soundcheck, and indeed the evening concert we all used Ruffy's old Gretch kit. As Paul fiddled with the drums, adjusting and tightening as he went, I siezed the chance and introduced myself. That evening, during the interval, before which, our 2 songs had closed the first half Paul sought me out.
"It was crap wasn't it?" I said. (It WAS crap)
He looked up at me, thought for a while, grinned and said
"Well, put it this way And...I wouldn't give up the day job!"

The most nerve-wracking thing I've ever had to do!

My subject was Art and Design, so around about 1992/3 I was desperately thinking of how I could involve Paul in some way with a Graphics project on CD sleeve design, which would include looking at the intelligent and accessible designs used by the Ruts.
So, it was set up. For the kids the brief was to create a series of a CD sleeve designs for Foxy's (then) band The Fluffy Kittens. He was to come into school and talk to this group of 20 or so year 11 GCSE students about what, as the 'commissioner' of this design work, he was particularly looking for; and a little bit about what it was like to be a 'Rock and Roller' He said afterwards, and repeated it again some years later the last time I spoke to him that it was "the most nerve-wracking thing I've ever had to do!" He settled his nerves beforehand by doing the Daily Telgraph crossword. The kids thought he was great.
I still have copies of all the designs

Do us a tape!

I went through about a year and a half when I played 'Rythmn Collision' over and over again (like Womack says) till the grooves were gone. So, needless to say when I first met Foxy,I was keen to find out as much as I could about this seminal mix of musical styles which sound so effortless as you listen to them
"Dunno, And...I don't even have a copy of the bloody thing. Do us a tape will ya?"
I dutifully ran off a cassette copy from my prized vinyl (though it did seem very odd)
"Fanx. I'd forgotten just how good it was!"
He wrote on the inside cover of the copy of Dirty Strangers' 'Burn the Bubble' he gave me in return along with a tape of Fluffy Kittens demos ("It's MY hand in the photo" - on 'Burn' - he was so chuffed)
