Who I'd like to meet: Anyone passionate about Midwest sports that loves good sports writing.
The Sports Bank.net is a Midwest focused webzine featuring commentaries on the most stimulating topics and interviews with some of the biggest names in sports. It covers the sports markets in Illinois, Wisconsin, and Minnesota exclusively; and continues expansion into other regional markets. It was founded in 2007 in Chicago by Paul M. Banks. In 2006, Banks was one of a group of twenty young American journalists selected to participate in a Fulbright fellowship in Berlin. In April ‘07, he attended the Sports Journalism Summit II hosted by the Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, Florida.
His work has been featured in numerous media outlets including FOX, CBS, Chicago Sun-Times, Chicago Tribune and 670 The Score. Banks has also appeared as a guest commentator on Comcast Sports Net, Chicago Tribune RedEye, ESPN Radio, and Sporting News Radio. While a football beat reporter and sports columnist for the student daily at the University of Illinois, his work was regularly featured on ESPN.com. He also has an MBA from Loyola University Chicago.
Currently, Banks serves as a sports writer for NBC 5 Chicago’s website and the Washington Times. He also free-lances regularly for a number of publications. In August of 2008 he was also selected as the city’s sports scene writer for the Chicago 2016 Olympic Channel.
The United Football League and Michael Vick’s Future Ron Bodine Friday, 24th of July 2009 at 12:42:16 PM If Michael Vick remains suspended from the National Football League for the 2009 season (which seems like a possibility even in light of recent news) then his options will be very few. The public relations heat from signing Vick may be too intense for Roger Goodell and any NFL team that elects to take a chance on the felon convicted for operating a dog fighting ring. It has been rumored that Goodell may consider allowing Vick to attend NFL training camp but will decide whether or not to reinstate Vick at a later date. I have to imagine that bad public relations and a few PETA protestors in the parking lot would have an influence on Goodell’s final decision.
Various reports indicate Vick has filed for bankruptcy due to several millions of dollars in debt, and he was recently working in construction due to lack of cash flow. Even UFL critics have to admit that a starting quarterback position in the UFL is more glamorous and less hazardous than a job in construction. Vick has not played professional football since the close of the 2006 NFL season, and the longer he stays dormant the less marketable he will be to NFL teams down the road. The United Football League is likely Vick’s best option and would provide him with an opportunity to stay fresh by competing with other free agents like J.P. Losman and Tim Rattay. The opportunity will allow Vick to prove his value and stay on the radar of NFL teams shopping for quarterbacks in 2010.
