paul's Interests
|
| General | My hobbies include fishing, bicycling, magic and turning my mind to mush in front of the television. | | Music | My group's name is Porkbelly Futures. I've uploaded a couple of selections from our debut CD, "Way Past Midnight," which was released in 2005 on Wildflower Records. (That's a label owned by Judy Collins, Sweet Judy Blue Eyes herself.) The lads and I are just about to start work on a new record--I still call them records, don't you?--and I'll try to stick some of that stuff up here to see what you think of it. But while I try to figure out how to do all that (I think I have to ask my daughter) check out our website: porkbellys.com. | | Movies | See you if you can find any of these. They're all Canadian films (I'm Canadian) so you'll have to check the "Foreign Film" section, even if you live in Canada.
"Perfectly Normal" -- a film in the hockey/opera genre, starring Scottish actor Robbie Coltrane and the brilliant Michael Riley. The film was directed by Yves Simoneau, who has gone on to a great career in the US of A. I co-wrote the script with Eugene Lipinski, and we won the Genie for it, Canada's version of the Oscar.
"Giant Steps" -- a jazz/coming of age story. firected by theatre great Richard Rose, I co-wrote with Greg Dummett. It stars Billy Dee Williams, who does kind of a Theolonius Monk impersonation.
"Whale Music" -- based on my novel of the same name. Directed by Richard J. Lewis, who is now in the States making "C.S.I." Maury Chaykin stars (he won the Best Actor Genie for it) and I portray Pete the Bartender who, in my mind, has always been the real star of the story.
"Camilla" -- a road movie. Directed by the wonderful Deepa Mehta. The movie stars Briget Fonda and Jessica Tandy, two very beautiful women.
I've also written and directed four short films: "Mump & Smoot in 'The Princess Who Wouldn't Smile'"; "Moon and Mann"; "A Man's Life." | | Television | I've worked as a writer and/or producer on the following shows: "Due South," "John Woo's Once a Thief," "Power Play," "Tom Stone," "Missing," "Chilly Beach," and the upcoming Showcase comedy "Moose TV." | | Books | Novels:
"The Service" (My first book, quite funny if I do say so myself.)
"Home Game" (A baseball novel, set in the world of carnival freaks.)
"The Life of Hope" (Kind of autobiographical; the hero is a bit of a tweezok.)
"King Leary" (A hockey novel. It won the Stephen Leacock Award for Humour.)
"Whale Music" (Penthouse magazine called it "the best rock'n'roll novel ever. I'm not sure how I feel about that.)
"Logan in Overtime" (Another hockey novel. It didn't win anything, but seems to please beer-swilling young men.)
"Civilization" (Set in the early days of filmmaking.)
"The Spirit Cabinet" (All about a pair of Las Vegas magaicians not unlike Siegfried and Roy.)
"Galveston" (Or, as it's known in the States, "Storm Chasers." It's about storm chasers. The one time I give a novel a name that is in any way American, those eejits make me change it. It was nominated for the Giller prize.)
"The Ravine" (I've just finished this. Another semi-autobiographical novel. It's about a writer with substance abuse problems, who squanders his talents writing for television and screws up his marriage, etcetera. The reason that it's semi-autobiographical is that the guy's name is "Phil.")
Non-fiction:
"Hometown Heroes" (I hung around with the 1988 Canadian Olympic Hockey team. They came fourth.)
"Fishing With My Old Guy" (I traveled to Northern Quebec with my angling mentor Gordon deval in search of the world record brook trout. The trip was an unmitigated disaster. Interestingly, it's my most popular book.)
"The Boy on the Back of the Turtle" (I traveled to the Galapagos Islands with my daughter [seven years old, at the time] and my father [seventy.] It's a good book. You should try to find it.)
"From the Far Side of the River" (Angling literature. Which, of course, falls squarely between fiction and non-fiction.) | | Heroes | Kurt Vonnegut, Richard Brautigan, John Gardner, Red Skelton, Jerry Lewis, Jackie Gleason, Dennis Potter and Lefty Kreh. |

About me:
Hello, Paul Quarrington here, it was actually my daughter who set this up for me, but I began to think I was wasting a lot of potential, and also I began to feel sorry for myself because for the longest time I had only one friend, that nice man Tom, and my daughter then advised me that he was the man who started "My Space" and that he was everyone's friend. So... the thing of it is, I'm a writer and a musician, and as such have some, well, writing and music that I want people to be aware of. I'm not the best self-promoter, as my friends (in real life I have more than one) will tell you, but this seems like a reasonably civil way of doing it, besides I will only be grandstanding to those few beknighted souls who stumble upon this site unawares.
|
Who I'd like to meet:
Writers, musicians, filmmakers, poor self-promoters, anglers, magicians, poets, and all other interesting souls. I've written a lot under "Interests" so I need a lot of friends so that their pictures will fill up the space.
