We've released our third CD "TRANSMISSIONS"
It is a double record that features some classic American traditional music on the first disc (Standard Transmissions) and a five part instrumental piece on the second disc (Automatic Transmissions). It is another release under the Michigan folk music label Embassy Hotel Records and we've been getting great feedback from friends, fans, and family. Here is what the good folks at AMG had say...
Paul's Big Radio's third release is a two-disc set that feels like a transitional statement, acknowledging the roots of American country music on the first disc, labeled Standard, with mostly acoustic versions of old Appalachian string band tunes, and then exploring a jazzy, jam band side with the second disc, called Automatic, which is comprised of several lengthy, atmospheric, and decidedly electric instrumentals. The traditional material is done with the ragged passion of the truly smitten and possessed, with lead singer Paul Lippens' vocals careening through mountain standards like "In the Pines" and Uncle Dave Macon's "Old Plank Road," while turning the opening track, "Little Joe," into the kind of spry, spirited hoedown that would make any mountain string band proud. Yeah, it sounds distantly like bluegrass, but it isn't, drawing its strength from an older and deeper well. The second disc is even more impressive, a completely integrated set of spacy and funky instrumentals that allow lead guitarist Josh Killom in particular to really shine and points to how unpredictable and versatile PBR really are. This isn't a band content to stand in one place very long, and it will be interesting to see where they go next.
