Cheifly?
Ronnie Lane. Billy Bragg.
But there are plenty others in the mix, like...
Alejandro Escovedo // Badfinger // Beach Boys // Beatles // Belle & Sebastian // Buddy Holly // Coral // Electric Light Orchestra // Elvis Costello // Faces // Ian Dury // Kinks // Kula Shaker // La's // Lyle Lovett // Michael Penn // Neil Finn // Neil Innes // Neil Young // Nick Drake // Oasis // Ocean Colour Scene // Old 97's // Paul Simon // Paul Weller // Primal Scream // Ricky Nelson // Small Faces // Smiths // Spoon // Stone Roses // Tom Petty // Verve // Waking Eyes
Paul's 3rd solo LP, "Pieces of the Atlantic" was recorded over the latter half of 2005, with Michael Sauer of Hollus providing the majority of musical direction (and accompaniment), though we also got Hollus bassist Sean Blythe in on a couple of tracks, too.
It's far and away its author's best work yet, jumping from earthy blues to tabla loops, wall of sound ballads to whispered sighs, ukulele spirituals to the-best-song-Neil-Young-never-recorded-about-a-small-town-in-Connecticut. Lyrically, muses are found in hipster actresses, Texan tornadoes, the Tao te Ching, and rowboats lost at sea, to name a few.
The album's first single, "Parker Posey," made its web debut in August of 2005 - climbing to number 2 on BandSpace's most popular list and racking in multiple downloads at MusicInStyle.
Aside from decidedly different musical stylings, the fact that Paul Snyder and Hollus are rather ominously imposing blips on each other's respective radars should come as no surprise. Snyder and Sauer began writing songs together in 1998 and were the founding members of Northwest Passage, which disbanded in 2001.
Despite eventually learning how to compose entirely on his own, Paul's been knocking on Mike's door ever since. Fortunately, he keeps answering.
