I HAVE HAD A VARIED CAREER of recording and international touring. I was a member of Ted Milton's legendary punk jazz combo BLURT, criss-crossing Europe and North America by train and featuring on half a dozen albums. In the late Eighties I was with cult indie rockers THE WOOD CHILDREN, releasing 2 albums and touring the UK and France. We reformed in 2005 for a series of sucessful gigs. As a member of soulful UK Americana favourites GRAND DRIVE I recorded 4 albums for LOOSE and SONY/BMG, working with producers PETE HOFFMAN, JERRY BOYS (Buena Vista Social Club), JIM CREGAN (Cockney Rebel/Rod Stewart) and MALCOLM BURN (Bob Dylan/Emmylou Harris/Iggy Pop/Patti Smith) as well as tours of the U.S, Scandinavia and the UK. In the mid nineties I studied with American jazz drummer CLIFFORD JARVIS (Sun Ra/Archie Shepp/Pharoah Saunders). I worked on several shows with physical theatre company EARTHFALL as musican and composer including work on the soundtrack for their BAFTA award winning film 'Too Old to Dream'. As a composer, I have written for Caminhos/Welsh Independent Dance and short film 'Hammerman' (dir. Andy Shelley). Other collaborations/sessions/gigs include THE BLUE AEROPLANES ('Cavaliers' (Artstar) 'Altitude' (Harvest/EMI) ), Augustine, Patrick Duff, Strangelove, Witness, Suzy Hug, Taxi Val Mentek, Invisible Pair of Hands, Lol Coxhill, Canton Opera and free-rock guitarist Jean Francois Pauvros. In 2005 I released an album of improvisations with folk guitarist IAN KEAREY (ex Oyster Band) which got a rave review from SHIRLEY COLLINS in FOLK ROOTS and airplay on BBC RADIO 3's LATE JUNCTION. I also played on the soundtrack for ITV series 'Jerico' (starring Robert Lindsay) for composer DOMINIK SCHERRER and toured Italy and the UK with lounge-rockers COUSTEAU to promote their third album 'Nova Scotia' (ENDEAVOR/UNIVERSAL). 2006 was pretty hectic with a healthy mix of recording, gigs and touring, film and T.V. sessions as well as MDing and co-composing for theatre and dance. In the summer and early autumn I was working on BIG HANDS, a 'theatre noir' piece written and performed by writer/actor/raconteur GERALD TYLER. It's great. The music is by my ambient jazz-rock group LIMBO, performed live. On top of an office block. We re-mounted it in 2007, this time in a warehouse so Gerald could arrive at the start of the show in his car. The Guardian gave us a five star review. With BAKKUS, a collaboration between EARTHFALL and Polish theatre/vocal group CHOREA. I co-directed and composed the music with trumpeter ROGER MILLS and the show toured Poland and Wales. Working with producer/multi-instumentalist SIMON ALPIN is always a pleasure and we did a couple of album projects in 2006. One was for singer-songwriter GARRON FRITH and the other for U.K based U.S. singer and songwriter KATHLEEN HASKARD, co-produced by CHUCK PROPHET. Back with Dominik Scherrer again, I played on the soundtrack of the film SCENES OF A SEXUAL NATURE starring EWAN MACGREGOR. It's an entertaining film with a lot of 'name' brit actors like Catherine Tate and Tom Hardy and some pretty groovy music. Worth a look. My most unusual gig of 2006 was performing under the Cumberland Basin swing bridge in Bristol docks in the freezing cold. The project was called TRIANGULATION, a music/film/poetry extravaganza created as part of the BRUNEL200 festival. The very beautiful music was composed by trumpeter PETE JUDGE who I also had the pleasure of performing with in THE BLESSING.
WELCOME to my Myspace which tells you about some of my past and present musical activities. Currently, I am musical director for Year of the Bear theatre company, with two show in the works for 2009. I also have a new project called Eyebrow with trumpeter Pete Judge (Get the Blessing). In the past few months I have worked with Natacha Atlas, Viv Albertine (The Slits), Damo Suzuki (Can) and Get The Blessing. For more detailed biographical information allow your eyes to drift unsuspectingly to the left.....
