Born in Colombia, Pavelid Castaneda completed high school and university studies in Bogota, Colombia. He studied Music Education at the National Pedagogical University of Colombia.
Pavelid's life has been completely dedicated to music… singer. music director, composer and teacher.
In 1992 he relocated his familiy in Babylon, NY and soon thereafter he started his career as a renowned harpist, playing in the most renoved venues in new york.
At this time Pavelid and his wife Gladis enjoy a more relaxing life in Chapel Hill, NC where they moved recently to be close to Pavelid Jr. who is pursuing a career at Duke University and doing his passion: soccer. Of course, Gladis and Pavelid Sr, attend most of the Duke' soccer games.
Pavelid considers his children: Edmar, Juanita, Angela and Pavelid Jr. as its truly "American Dream."
UN SUEÑO: TOCAR EL ARPA
Cuando era niño había conocido del arpa y la música llanera gracias a mi hermano mayor, quien después de trabajar en un hato en el llano por muchos años, vino para vivir con nosotros. El me influenció con esta clase de música. De él aprendí a cantar canciones como: "José Maria" y "Fiesta en Elorza"entre otras.
Me hice arpista con mucho esfuerzo y sacrificio. Mis primeras lecciones de arpa las tomé en 1982 en Colombia con el gran maestro Carlos (Cuco) Rojas. En 1984 hice mi tercer y definitivo intento por graduarme de la universidad. La universidad no ofrecía arpa en su curriculum, por lo que tuve que tomar piano como instrumento principal y olvidarme del arpa por lo menos hasta que terminara mi carrera.
Cuando en 1992 llegué a NY se me presentó la oportunidad para trabajar tocando el arpa. Ante esto, mi esposa que aún estaba en Colombia tratando de vender mi arpa antes de venirse, tuvo que ponerse en la tarea de traerla. Así fué que pude tener el instrumento y empezar a montar un repertorio de musica internacional. Con no más de quince canciones en mi repertorio empecé a trabajar acompañado en el cuatro venezolano por mi hija Pilar.
Con el ansia de aprender más acerca del instrumento poco a poco me fuí metiendo en el mundo del arpa en USA. Para empezar me hice miembro de la American Harp Society y la International Folk Harp Society. También me subscribí a importantes revistas que me comenzaron a contar la realidad del arpa en el mundo. En este proceso de aprendizaje logré que me invitaran a participar tocando y dando talleres en las conferencias de la Folk Society en 1996 y 2000. En el año 2002 participé en en el evento de la Lyon and Healy llamado Harfest y que esta dedicado especialmente al arpa en el Jazz.
Aunque en Colombia habia conocido grandes arpistas la mayor influencia acerca de la música en el arpa la he adquirido aquí en USA donde pude estudiar con maestros como Alfredo R. Ortiz, Ray Pool y el pianista Alfredo Valdez Jr., y muchos otros de quienes tambien he aprendido. Entre ellos puedo citar a Roberto Perera, Javier Godinez, Silvia Wood, Lorenzo González, Nicolas Caballero, Deborah Henson-Conant, Lori Andrews, Parker, Jorge Espinosa, Atahualpa Poalasin, Carlos Murillas, Therese Honey, Laurie Rasmussen, Cindy Horstman, William Faulkner, Jun Zhi Cui, Shirley Dominguez, Sunita Staneslow, Louise Troter, René Devia y mi hijo Edmar, entre otros.
