Facts About Lupus:
Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease in which a person's immune system mistakenly attacks the body's own tissue.
Lupus can cause life-threatening damage to major organs such as the kidneys, lungs, heart and central nervous system.
Lupus is the leading cause of death among women with autoimmune diseases who are in their childbearing years (ages 15-45).
Women are five times more likely to die from lupus than men, and African Americans are three times more likely to die from lupus than caucasians.
Between 1979 and 1998 there was an approximate 70% increase in lupus deaths among middle-aged African American women.

1. Lupus is the deadliest disease you know nothing about. Did you know that:
a. More than 1.5 million Americans have lupus. The number of people with lupus could fill 30 Yankee Stadiums.
b. Every half hour, another person is diagnosed with lupus.

2. Lupus is a "stealth killer"
a. No one is safe. Lupus attacks the bodies of men, women and children.
b. No organ is spared – Lupus can damage any organ, including the skin, the lungs, the heart, the kidneys and the brain.
c. It's unpredictable – Lupus is a ticking time bomb that can explode at any time without warning.
d. Lupus can attack the body for years before the disease is diagnosed.
e. African Americans, Latinos, Asians and Native Americans develop lupus more frequently than Caucasians, a health disparity that remains unexplained.

3. Lupus causes great suffering
a. People with lupus suffer from a total loss of control:
i. Many lose their jobs, their homes and their ability to care for their families.
b. People with lupus suffer tremendous emotional and physical pain:
i. The disease can cause seizures, strokes, heart attacks, miscarriage and organ failure
ii. Treatments for lupus often have life-threatening side effects that can be worse than the disease itself
iii.They never know when and where the disease will attack them next

Paws Awhile Pet Rescue is a rescue organization dedicated to saving the lives of animals. Our focus is mostly on the following breeds: MASTIFFs, BULLDOGS, BIRDS, EXOTICS, TURTLES/TORTOISES, AND SALTWATER FISH. We fully educated our potential adopters on the breed, offer post adoption support, and educate on pet health care. We also have many beautiful CATS! We are a no kill rescue and we are doing all that we can to assist the City of San Antonio on thier path to becoming a no kill city!!*** We are funded by donations and our staff is made up of volunteers*** Our dogs/cats come from kill shelters and are rescued from certain death...OUR MANY SERVICES ARE LISTED BELOW- THIS IS HOW WE PAY THE BILLS ALONG WITH YOUR DONATIONS
Listed below are a few programs that we have to serve our community better. Please note, we are in desperate need of donations. Vetting for one dog on average is around $200, food for one week for our rescue averages from $100-175. We take donations at www.paypal.com email pawsawhilepets@yahoo.com
We are active conservationalists, we are also active in the avian community...we DO NOT adopt out adult birds, they stay in our facility for life, and yes some will out live us and we have made preperations of such the event! We do have room at this time for most sizes of birds!

Pet Sitting/Walking/PLANT CARE: We serve the NE/NC/NW area of San Antonio, TX
House-A-HOUND PROGRAM: We take donations of kennels and dog houses to assist low income and elderly people in keeping thier dogs safe and comfortable in the outdoors at no cost to them. Please notify us, we will pick up!
Disabled/Elderly Program: We help keep your pets in your homes, we also help finding a pet that matches your needs at a very reduced adoption fee. We also assist people on Medicare in getting determining if they are eligible for more benefits.
Pet Matching Service: We will help you determine what pet/breed is best for your lifestyle and assist you in finding this pet.
Lost Pet Program: We will assit you in finding your pet, fees are based on what we spend in and effort to bring your lost pet home!
Owner Turn-in: If you are bringing a dog to us, they must come with vet records, current meds, and if not spayed or neutered,a $50 fee will be assessed. If the dog is unvetted, a owner turn in fee of $100 dollars will be charged to vet your dog.

We need donations of MITOBAN for demodex mange, and revolution, heartworm/flea preventatative for all size dogs and for cats; we can always use gift certificates from petsmart, petco, lowes, home depot and tractor supply...we are always in need of xtra large kennels... 48" and larger are best. We are always in need of towels, rugs, dog beds, dog houses, dog kennels, dog runs, whole tiles (for dog runs),tarps(no rips), kitty litter, dog/cat food, dog beds, paper towels, cleaning supplies (Detergent, bleach, pine sol, lysol ect), garbage bags, sugar glider pouches, treats and toys. We also need dwarf trees for our aviaries!
We need Dog Houses for our House a Hound program providing qualified low income, disabled and elderly people with no cost dog houses!
It doesn't matter the breed, the color, the size, ifur, or human, t's all the same... please be a foster to someone in need!
