Let me begin by telling u a little bit about myself... I'm a 23 year old girl born and raised in Brooklyn, New york.
I haven't felt this optimistic about our country and the direction it was going in a loooong time, and I have never been prouder of my fellow Americans for standing up in record numbers, for getting ACTIVE and for really making a difference..
On January 20th, we watched Barack Obama stand upon the stairs of the Capitol, stairs which were built and laid by slaves not so long ago, and watched as he took his oath of office and became our 44th president.
Many doubted this day would ever come, many thought they wouldn't live to see the day, but here we are and the day has come, and we are better for it.
I've been laying low and watching the blogosphere these past few weeks.. Seeing others reactions and reading their feelings and just waiting to see how everything went before I put my thoughts out here..
It's fascinating to see the stark contrast there is when it comes to how different people of different political persuasions view this milestone in American History.
On the one hand you have thousands of people writing about how inspired and hopeful they feel, all in spite of our current economic crises and in spite of the numerous challenges we face when it comes to cleaning up the messes and facing the consequences of 8 years of disasterous and careless policies..
The majority of people seem optimistic and ready to face whatever challenges which may lie ahead.
We've all read the blogs about how many breathed a sigh of relief to finally see George Bush and Dick Cheney leave Washington once and for all..
People are ready to see the America which stood not only as a symbol of justice and freedom and hope and humanity, but the America which set an EXAMPLE of what true liberty and justice and diplomacy and freedom really is.
The America which didn't torture and led the fight for Human Rights. The America before the era of "Cowboy Diplomacy". The America whose elected officials worked FOR the people and not against them and who didn't try to skirt both international and national laws and who wasn't corrupt and secretive and who actually cared about what effects its actions had on ALL people. The America which revered its Constitution and didn't think of it as just "some god damned piece of paper".
I know I'm looking forward to having a President who LISTENS to us, the citizens, as well as to the rest of the world, and who THINKS about what he says before opening his mouth and who considers what consequences his policies and actions will have before doing something careless and/or irresponsible. The rest of the world is looking forward to that as well.
Make no mistake, I know that Obama is no "messiah". And God knows I wouldn't wish this mess on my worst enemy. We have immense struggles ahead and mistakes will be made. But I feel confident, for the first time in a long time, that we have a leader who will be considerate and thoughtful and careful.
And THAT, my friends, is a welcome change after 8 years of Bushney Rule.
I've also seen the blogs from the more radical Republicans/Neocons, whom have no plans of even giving Obama a chance. They label him as some socialist/communist/terrorist sympathizing American hating thug who's hell bent on destroying America..
It BOGGLES the mind to see people who actually believe this stuff.. Especially some bloggers in particular who aren't stupid at all but still somehow fall for all the anti-Obama fear mongering propaganda.
Then again, many of these people are the same people who defended Bushes actions no matter what, who called ME (and those who agreed with me) "socialist/commies" and "anti-American terrorist sympathizers"..
So I guess I shouldn't be at all surprised, really.
These bloggers have been writing for a while now about how Obama doesn't have any substance or real plans (when it doesn't take a genius to do a little bit of research and see exactly what his plans are. All one has to do is go to his website or the new revamped
whitehouse.gov site to see how he feels about the issues and what his plans are to fix a lot of the problems we're facing).
These people act like "change" and "hope" are dirty words and that anyone who (god forbid) wants to see this country on a different path than the path Bushney took us down is "drinking too much kool-aide".
Never mind that Obama has done his best to reach out to EVERYONE.
Never mind that he values ALL cultures, all people, regardless of their political party.. And will be EVERY ONES president.
Never mind that he's putting together a cabinet and team of advisers from both sides of the aisle.
Never mind that his number one priority, so far, has been to try and bridge the gap between the left and right because he KNOWS we'll never get anything done without working together.
Unfortunately, Obama will never do anything right to these people because they are hell bent on not liking him and not even giving him a chance.
Which is a shame...
And, not for nothing, it seems pretty un-American to wish failure on the guy, a la Rush Libaugh, especially at such a critical juncture in America.
Now I'm sure I'll have some Republicans and far-righters come on here and say:
"Well, Janie, you didn't give Bush a chance so why should we give Obama a chance?"
And to that I will always say I gave Bush many chances and wished him well when he first was elected. HE squandered such chances and that is NOT my fault, it's his.
And for those dillusional enough to believe that Bush did no wrong, I say:
"Look at the state of our country now. It's not all Clintons fault nor was it all the Democrats. Not all fault lies in Bush and his policies but the majority does. Just stating the facts, people." And btw: Anyone can look up "Bush failures" in google and thousands of pages, many legitimate, will pop up. SO for those of you who want links, only for me to give them t you and you to write them off no matter how substantiated they are: Do your own homework and be objective. If you truly are you'll see I'm right (though I'm sure you won't admit it, lol).
Now, as Obama said: The time has come to look ahead and not dwell on the mistakes of yesterday. If we're gonna get anywhere or do anything we need to stop the petty and divisive bickering, put away all those sour grapes, and get to work. TOGETHER.
I have FAITH in the American people. And I know that even though we've faced tough times and fell pretty low before, We the People have always come out of it on top.
So let's just DO IT already and get to work!
Wishing all the luck in the world to President Obama.. God bless him and God bless America!

THIS IS A HATE FREE ZONE, AND I AM A PROUD SISTER OF MY GAY BROTHER! ..

....

Make Me Brave for Life
God, make me brave for life: oh, braver than this.
Let me straighten after pain, as a tree straightens after the rain,
Shining and lovely again.
God, make me brave for life; much braver than this.
As the blown grass lifts, let me rise
From sorrow with quiet eyes,
Knowing Thy way is wise.
God, make me brave, life brings
Such blinding things.
Help me to keep my sight;
Help me to see aright
That out of dark comes light.
