We have been developing a method to cut down on the time it takes to produce a professional recording since 2004. This new workflow gives bands, even on the smallest budget, the opportunity to do a professional recording.
Here's how we do it:
All the rhythm tracks are recorded live in the studio. Our tracking room is now optimized to nearly eliminate all the instruments from bleeding into any open mics in the room. We are not using isolation rooms, everyone is in one room, and only the drummer uses headphones. You play better if you are all together, and you will "nail" the rhythm tracks faster, if you don't wear headphones. It's like playing a gig, NO headphones!
During the playback of the rhythm tracks, the engineer is developing an automated mix template for each track. When you finish tracking, the mixes are 50% done and they are saved and can be recalled with one click, at any time.
Next we do overdubs, vocals and solos etc. Again during playback, the mixes are refined, and now they are 75% to 100% complete.
Last step, we run the tracks through our mastering hardware, and sometimes through the 2 inch analog machine.
That's it, a good workflow in well designed tracking room, using professional equipment.
