significant listening experiences that marked directional shifts upon personal reflection: Charlie Parker records, esp. Now's The Time on Verve, the bootleg from Birdland 1950 and the Savoy Recordings. Chico Hamilton - El Chico. A Certain Ratio - Sextet. The voice of Billie Holiday. Sonny Clark's comping. Horace Silver's writing and the way he plays his own compositions. J Dilla - Donuts. Slum Village - Instrumentals from Fantastic, Vol. 1. Dionne Warwick - The Sensitive Sound Of Dionne Warwick. Giorgio Moroder. Paul Newman (the actor). ATCQ - The Low End Theory. Hearing John Dirac at 18 and very green.
I'm mainly a guitar player. I like to write music. I like to collaborate with other musicians. I live in Chicago. I think music opens doors. Some of the bands I play/have played with:
Tortoise,
Chicago Underground,
Isotope 217º,
New Horizons Ensemble,
A Cushicle,
SpliceCat,
Moment Of Inertia,
TriColor,
Brian Blade Fellowship,
Powerhouse Sound,
Fred Anderson Quartet,
Joshua Redman Elastic Band, a.o.
I sometimes lead projects of my own: they usually are simply called "Jeff Parker" or "Jeff Parker _____ (trio, quartet, organ quartet, etc.) and may consist of myself performing alone or with small or large aggregates of various configurations...
Hi Jeff, I saw you play with Isotope at the Knit many years ago. I love your playing! Your use of space is incredibly refreshing. Without time to digest, its pretty hard to keep eating.
Stolen Nature adeptly bridges the synthetic/organic abyss with uniquely composed granular textures, aleatoric rhythmic patterns and modal jazz structures. The release's arcane theme is unfalteringly cohesive and conceptual from beginning to end. Miller's compositional sensibility on Stolen Nature has reconciled the poles of unadulterated, native sounds and processed, algorithmic music. These two adverse ideas are adroitly synthesized into a hybrid entity that lives and breathes on its own. The stochastic electronics laden deep in Stolen Nature's structure seem to have a sentient quality that hauntingly reflects recent developments in the field of artificial intelligence. The intricate machinations featured on Stolen Nature are inclined to deep personal sentiments and emotion. Cullen's application of traditional instruments takes the antiquated oral tradition and fuses it into a futuristic context.
