Who I'd like to meet: Pro-Peace Rally Re-draws North Bronx Map
By Billy Wharton
What does one believe in– a depressing tale about the past told so often it seems real or a new experience which offers hope for the future? Participants in last Saturday’s Picnic for Peace in Pelham Bay Park were faced with just such a dilemma.
A remarkably uniform tale was repeated by many who made it out to the small stage in the park. The neighborhood, primarily Pelham Bay, was hopelessly conservative. For younger people especially this meant a relatively boring existence living in an aging community that creeped along oblivious to life outside of a three or four block radius. Residents, they argued, seemed to care far more about the status of their lawn furniture then the eight young men and women from the Bronx who have been killed in Iraq.
However, yesterday as people turned up for the Picnic for Peace to express their opposition to the war in Iraq, something strange happened. Names and addresses were exchanged and soon a new map of the North Bronx was being drawn. A community organizer lives on Middletown Road. A fellow with two nephews in the military came from Co-op City. There is a vegan on Zerega. An amateur poet is two 6 train stops away. A liberal evangelical lives a few blocks away. Politically active students live just across from Pelham Bay Park. People from Castle Hill are running a clothing drive for a homeless shelter. A human rights lawyer is on Country Club Road. Two people committed to the politics of “direct action” live nearby. There is even a socialist on Roberts Avenue (ok, that’s me)!
With their neighborhood map re-drawn, participants settled in for a day of music, food and discussion. A short skit highlighted the absurdity of President Bush’s war-plan as catch-phrases such as “fight them there, so we don’t fight them here” were confronted by reports of Iraqi and US causalities, violations of the rights of women, and the continuing use of Sadam Hussein’s law banning trade unions. Small discussions were held on veganism and social justice and the history of Middle East. Finally, musicians Shera and Darren Deicide kept the crowd rocking with politically conscious music.
The highlight of the day came later in the event. As punk-folk artist Darren Deicide belted out a foot-stomping song about the violent use of napalm during the Vietnam War, two US military jets buzzed by the park. This provided a poignant reminder of another part of reality – the reality of war. It was clear however, that many people in the Bronx believe that a community organized for peace was an effective way to place limits on a government committed to endless war.
Organizing will continue. There was a discussion about an organizing meeting and plans will be finalized soon. If you are interested in being part of this new community effort please contact me at (718) 869-2279 or email pelhambaypeace@yahoo.com.

Celebrate Black History Month - Free Screening of "Lumumba"
Liberation Film Series - Free Movie Screening Lumumba (2000), Raoul Peck, dir.
Celebrate Black History month with a free screening of Raoul Peck's poignant film Lumumba (2000). The movie documents the life and death of the brilliant African politician Patrice Lumumba. Lumumba was the shining star of a generation of post-independence African left-wing leaders interested in charting a course away from Western dependency and imperialism. Peck's Lumumba is a tragic figure whose demise raises questions about the possibilities for the liberation of Africa in the 21st century.

3-DAY INTENSIVE INTRODUCTION TO MARXISM JULY 11-13 2008 NYC "Them belly full, but we hungry" The Global Food Crisis & What Capitalism Has To Do With It
As global warming, soaring food prices, war and racism wrack the planet, resistance movements from Nepal to the Niger Delta to Chiapas are linking the looming global crisis to one source: capitalism. But questions remain: Why is the most productive social system humanity has ever created also so destructive? What are the alternatives to capitalism? How do we get there from here?
Using the global food crisis as a starting point, "Them Belly Full, But We Hungry" is a three-day introduction to marxism that seeks to unpack how capitalism works—to get behind surface appearances and see why capitalism must put profit before basic human needs. It will also examine the intersections of revolutionary movements and people's struggles against the ravages of capitalism and its three pillars, homophobia, racism, and sexism. The intensive is designed for workers, students, artists and activists who are interested in not only understanding the world, but changing it.
Marx brought a dialectical approach to participating in social change. He recognized that an understanding of the world cannot come from passive contemplation alone, that active struggle is necessary. Yet he also insisted that analysis, critical reflection--learning from our own experience as well as those of others--and struggle to make our concepts and ways of seeing both clear and accessible are as important as political engagement in the streets.

We've now had 5 years of lies about 9/11, WMD's, and freedom. The real reasons were oil, profiteering, and fascism. Not just Bush, but the news media, most of congress, and all who remain silent. And now they'll use fear to quash dissent. It's nothing new -- it's been going on for ages. War, poverty, ecocide, arrogant bullying --they're all from greed and fear, which come from ignorance. ♥ But it's not too late -- we can still learn to make peace. Talk with people. Love, Eric It'
